The Roses: The Complete Plates (Taschen 25th Anniversary)
Redoute studied with the finest flower painters in France and Amsterdam, and developed a breathtaking skill at translating his observations of nature onto paper. His illustrations of the botanical alphabets of D. M. Guillamain were a landmark in flower painting for their accuracy and beauty. He was also an innovator in the techniques of printing, introducing "stipple-engraving" to France, always striving for greater exactitude in his art.
This is a glorious and completely faithful reproduction of his most celebrated work "Les Roses", which was published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824. In "Les Roses", he turns his attention to that most romantic and evocative of subjects, and this handsome volume preserves every detail of Redoute's masterful representation of nature's gifts.
Redoute as Official Artist
First Redouté was appointed as draughtsman to the cabinet of Marie Antoinette and he continued to paint right through the French Revolution.
After the Revolution, his post of official artist was transferred to the French Natural History Museum where he prepared illustrations for scientific publications. This involved developing botanical art for the Empress Josephine as part of her project to develop and document the gardens at Malmaison.

Latterly, he certainly developed to perfection a method of colour application which involved the use of a minute chamois leather or cotton mop for the application of a succession of colours to a copper engaving.
In later years, he also learned how to paint using pure watercolour - from a Dutch artist, Gerard van Spaendonck.

The Roses of Pierre-Joseph Redouté
- Pierre-Joseph Redoute : Rose Prints
- Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a French artist of the late 18th and early 19th century. The images here were taken from his famous book of prints, Les Roses. Redouté mastered the unusual technique of stipple engraving--the use of tiny dots, rather than lines. This made possible the subtle variations in coloring for which his work is known. We hope you enjoy these prints!

Floral Art of Pierre-Joseph Redoute
Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) is the best known botanical artist of any era and was described as both the 'Rembrandt' and the 'Raphael' of flowers by 19th-century writers, He studied the work of earlier Flemish and Dutch floral artists, and when in Paris studied botany. He was then given special access to the gardens at Versailles by Marie Antoinette, and to those of Malmaison by the Empress Josephine.
His greatest works are his carefully observed and supremely delicate watercolours on vellum and parchment, but he also painted in oils and illustrated more than 50 botanical books with color prints.
This book accompanied the 1992 exhibition in the USA of the work of artist.
Les Roses (French Edition)
The three-volume Les Roses is Redouté's most famous work, and its 170 hand-colored plates the most frequently reproduced of all botanical illustrations. Pierre-Joseph Redouté (1759-1840) served as drawing master to the queens and princesses of France for half a century, from Marie Antoinette to Marie Amélie. Many of the paintings for Les Roses were made from the hundreds of varieties in the Empress Josephine's rose garden at Malmaison. This Octavo Edition reproduces one of only five copies printed in large folio format on vélin paper, with a double set of plates, plain and colored, and includes, for the first time, a complete English translation. Commentary by Sandra Raphael.
Redoute Roses
First published in parts between 1817 and 1824, this collection of 167 botanical prints was intended as a scientific treatise. Produced in collaboration with the botanist Claude-Antoine Thory, it achieved early fame for the beauty of the illustrations which show the glory and infinite variety of the rose. Pierre-Joseph Redoute was known in his time as "the Raphael of flowers". He was fortunate in his patronage, enjoying the favours of Queen Marie-Antoinette and the Empress Josephine, whose gardens at Malmaison inspired Redoute, though she did not live to see her protege's great work. The stipple-engraving of the original plates was a process that Redoute learnt in England in 1786 was perfectly matched to the delicacy and accuracy of the original paintings.
The Lilies
Gathering all of the plates from Pierre-Joseph Redoute's original eight volumes (published between 1802 and 1816), Les Liliacees is not just a book about lilies -- it's also a foray into an exacting and rare art. Redoute is widely considered to have been the one of the best botanical illustrators; he had not only a breathtaking skill at translating the natural world onto paper but also strove to improve printing technology (he introduced "stipple-engraving" to France). His contributions to the art of botanical illustration are unequalled; in fact, the complete set of original volumes of Les Liliacees is highly prized -- its current value is approximately $400,000. For considerably less, you can have all of Redoute's 486 lilies, beautifully reproduced on thick, creamy paper. Flipping through, you'll be transported to the magical world of 19th-century botany. A pure delight.

- JoAnn - I can tell you that every single Redoute print I have ever seen has been signed - but all have been reproduced as facsimiles of the original artwork. Giclee printers are now very good at producing facsimiles and it's entirely possible that you have bought a good reproduction.
Any good gallery specialising in antique prints - ideally botanical art prints - should be able to tell you whether you've bought an original print or a modern reproduction.

- I was at Good Will today and bought a picture that I thought would look good in my antique bedroom I am putting together. It is signed by PJ Redoute. I looked it up on the internet and found that he was a famous artist and this print was first done on 1863. It was priced at $273. I guess that was for the original one. Like I said, the one I have is signed. What can you tell me about it?
Thanks, JoAnn
