Redoute as Official Artist

Redouté's profile is in no small way due to his patronage by two of the premier first ladies of European history

First Redouté was appointed as draughtsman to the cabinet of Marie Antoinette and he continued to paint right through the French Revolution.

After the Revolution, his post of official artist was transferred to the French Natural History Museum where he prepared illustrations for scientific publications. This involved developing botanical art for the Empress Josephine as part of her project to develop and document the gardens at Malmaison.

A large number of Redouté's original watercolors on vellum are in the collection of the Musée National de La Malmaison in France and other museums, though many are in private collections. His renown, however, is due to the remarkable quality of the prints.

Images of work by Pierre-Joseph Redouté

Redouté originally went to London and Kew in 1786 to learn the art of stipple engraving and color printing which was to provide him him with the technical expertise needed to produce his beautiful botanical illustrations. He later introduced "stipple-engraving" to France.

Latterly, he certainly developed to perfection a method of colour application which involved the use of a minute chamois leather or cotton mop for the application of a succession of colours to a copper engaving.

In later years, he also learned how to paint using pure watercolour - from a Dutch artist, Gerard van Spaendonck.

Most of the images of Redoute's work which can now be seen online via galleries which are
- either selling original prints / colour engravings
- or are providing giclee prints of the originals.

The Roses of Pierre-Joseph Redouté

His paintings of roses were published between 1817 and 1824. They are said to be the flower paintings (of any botanical artist) which are most often reproduced.

Pierre-Joseph Redoute : Rose Prints
Pierre-Joseph Redouté was a French artist of the late 18th and early 19th century. The images here were taken from his famous book of prints, Les Roses. Redouté mastered the unusual technique of stipple engraving--the use of tiny dots, rather than lines. This made possible the subtle variations in coloring for which his work is known. We hope you enjoy these prints!

It's almost certainly a reproduction which means it could have been produced anytime. Try using a search engine to track down the original

JoAnn - I can tell you that every single Redoute print I have ever seen has been signed - but all have been reproduced as facsimiles of the original artwork. Giclee printers are now very good at producing facsimiles and it's entirely possible that you have bought a good reproduction.

Any good gallery specialising in antique prints - ideally botanical art prints - should be able to tell you whether you've bought an original print or a modern reproduction.

I was at Good Will today and bought a picture that I thought would look good in my antique bedroom I am putting together. It is signed by PJ Redoute. I looked it up on the internet and found that he was a famous artist and this print was first done on 1863. It was priced at $273. I guess that was for the original one. Like I said, the one I have is signed. What can you tell me about it?
    Thanks, JoAnn

    Hi JoAnn Brewer
Did you find out if your painting is original or not? I also have a painting framed in very old wood and have faded old paper bag like paper at back of picture. Everything is deteorating naturally. Very thin glass covering picture and surrounding material around picture is also deteorating and it is signed! I found old 1800 books in my addic along with this picture...
    Thanks You.

When the framing, backing and support for drawing is all deteriorating it just means that the materials are old and not archival. It does NOT mean that the picture is valuable.

All reproductions of Redoute's work are signed - but that doesn't make the work original.

The best thing to do if you think you may have an original print by a famous artist is go to a reputable dealer in antique fine art prints (that means they won't be cheap!) and/or am Antique Print Fair (again nothing will be cheap). Take you rpint with you and see what they have to say.

Bear in mind that most prints people think are originals are just good reproductions.

French flower painter Pierre-Joseph Redoute is often viewed as one of the last and the best of these painters and engravers. Commissioned by among others, Napoleon's Josephine, Redoute studied with the finest flower painters in France and Amsterdam, and developed a breathtaking skill at translating his observations of nature onto paper. His illustrations of the botanical alphabets of D.-M. Guillamain were a landmark in flower painting for their accuracy and beauty. He was also an innovator in the techniques of printing, introducing "stipple-engraving" to France, always striving for greater exactitude in his art.

This is a glorious and completely faithful reproduction of his most celebrated work Les Roses, which was published in three volumes between 1817 and 1824. In Les Roses he turns his attention to that most romantic and evocative of subjects, and this handsome volume preserves every detail of Redout?'s masterful representation of nature's gifts. Redoute's Lilies

You don't have to be a connoisseur of lilies to appreciate these beautiful specimens. In fact, the less you know about them the more this new book will fascinate you. Gathering all of the plates from Pierre-Joseph Redoute's original eight volumes (published between 1802 and 1816), Les Liliacees is not just a book about lilies -- it's also a foray into an exacting and rare art.

Redoute is widely considered to have been the one of the best botanical illustrators; he had not only a breathtaking skill at translating the natural world onto paper but also strove to improve printing technology (he introduced "stipple-engraving" to France). His contributions to the art of botanical illustration are unequalled; in fact, the complete set of original volumes of Les Liliacees is highly prized -- its current value is approximately $400,000. For considerably less, you can have all of Redoute's 486 lilies, beautifully reproduced on thick, creamy paper. Flipping through, you'll be transported to the magical world of 19th-century botany. A pure delight.
