Xbox 360: Three red lights flash on the Ring of Light

From Microsoft Support Page

SYMPTOMS
You see three lights on the Ring of Light (RoL) flash red on the front of the Xbox 360 console. The upper-right quadrant light is the only light that does not flash red.

CAUSE
This behavior occurs when the Xbox 360 console experiences a hardware failure.

THINGS TO TRY
1. Examine the lights on the power supply. When you turn on the console, the power supply light should illuminate green even if the three lights on the Ring of Light flash red. If the power supply unit light is not green, follow the steps that are listed in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base articles:

906101 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906101/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is red

906102 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906102/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is orange

906103 (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/906103/) Xbox 360: The power supply light is not illuminated

2. Turn off the console. Wait 10 seconds, and then again turn on the console to see whether the symptom occurs again.

3. If you continue to experience this behavior, contact Xbox Customer Support.

Should You Upgrade To An XBox 360

By: Colette Ianieri

The XBox 360 is going to be one of the most sought after gifts of this upcoming holiday season. However many people want to know is it worth upgrading now, or should you wait, here are some factors you may want to consider.

The base price for and XBox 360 is $300, the most common accessories are the 20GB hard drive ($100), wireless controllers ($50) and headsets ($20). Many vendors are offering packages with a variety of options with prices of $500 or more. While some of these options depend on your gaming style and preferences the hard drive is the one option we recommend you get right away. The hard drive allows you to save games to play back later and install updates that make many older games compatible on the new platform.

One of the advantages the XBox 360 will have over other game systems is graphics. The graphics of other gaming systems are top notch but on newer games like Project Gotham Racing 3, NFL 06 and Call of Duty 2 which were written for this platform, there simply is no comparison. When you compare the specifications the XBox 360 to any of its competitors, it's anywhere from 2 to 10 times more powerful. If you are lucky enough to own and HDTV you will really notice the difference, although it will work on standard TV's as well.

With this console Microsoft is also making a concerted effort to make the Xbox part of your media center. It can connect to any other windows networked computer in your house. It can be used to play movies, slideshows of pictures, and MP3 files. If you own and IPod or digital camera you can also connect them directly to the USB port located on the front game console.

Lastly you'll want to think about Xbox Live. This is a paid online membership that allows you to get free trials of new games and play in head to head action against other players over your high speed internet connection. You also have access to updates and patches as they become available.

For hard core gamers there is no choice, they will do practically anything to get their hands on the newest and latest systems available. For others it may be worth waiting until 2006 when Playstation 3 is released to see how platforms compare.

Microsoft's billion-dollar 'Red Ring of Death'

Commentary: Xbox 360 failure has already spawned book, Internet legend

By MarketWatch
Last Update: 5:49 PM ET Jul 5, 2007

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- When a hardware repair is so famous that it spawns a book, an urban legend and not one but two fearsome names in less than a year, you know the company involved has got big trouble.
On Thursday, Microsoft Corp. revealed just how much when it pegged the price of fixing that persistent general hardware failure plaguing its Xbox 360 game console at more than $1 billion.
In the U.K., where the failure is so pervasive that the electronics repair company Micromart has stopped trying to fix it, they call it simply "the three red lights fault."
In the U.S., where one enterprising technician is selling an electronic fix-it book that promises to solve the problem, it's earned the moniker, "the red ring of death."
A previous fix that made the rounds of Internet game sites, and which consisted of wrapping the machine in a towel, has since been debunked, at least in the opinion of other Internet game sites.
Given that the book costs only $23.99, you have to wonder why someone at Microsoft didn't go to threeredlightsfix.com and buy one months ago.
They could have sent it to Micromart and all the retailers who have lost money on those extended warranties they sold to cover Xbox 360 buyers once the manufacturer's warranty expired.
My guess is those retailers will be getting some of Microsoft's $1 billion, which may help convince them to carry the next version of the machine. But the cost to Microsoft will go beyond dollar terms.

All those gamers who've spent hours either at repair shops or online with tech support -- instead of playing games on their machines -- are going to remember long after Microsoft has fixed the problem.
