Redskins' Monk and Green lead six into Hall of Fame
By Larry Fine
PHOENIX (Reuters) - Former Washington Redskins team mates Art Monk and Darrell Green were among six players to win election into the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday.
Joining receiver Monk and cornerback Green in the August 2 induction ceremonies in Canton, Ohio, will be Fred Dean, Emmitt Thomas, Andre Tippett and Gary Zimmerman.
The Redskins franchise enjoyed double honors as Monk, who retired in 1995, won election after a long wait while Green got in on his first year on the ballot.
Defensive end Dean split his career between the San Diego Chargers and San Francisco 49ers, linebacker Tippett starred for the New England Patriots, Zimmerman was a tackle for the Minnesota Vikings and Denver Broncos, and Thomas was a cornerback for the Kansas City Chiefs.
"Right now my heart is fluttering," Dean told reporters over a telephone hook-up in which he thanked the late 49ers coach and general manager Bill Walsh for shaping his career.
"I didn't work for this, I worked for the love of the game. To be inducted into the Hall of Fame is a beautiful thing.
SENIOR CANDIDATES
The six players were chosen from 17 finalists by the Hall of Fame selection committee. Each one had to receive at least 80 percent of votes cast.
Thomas, who played from 1966-1978 for the Chiefs, was one of two senior candidates considered along with Marshall Goldberg, a back for Pittsburgh and the Chicago Cardinals.
The other five 'modern' players that were elected survived two cut-downs among 15 finalists, first to 10 and then to five.
The last five eliminated were wide receiver Cris Carter of the Minnesota Vikings; Chicago Bears' defensive end Richard Dent; guards Randall McDaniel of the Vikings and Bob Kuechenberg of the Miami Dolphins and Chiefs linebacker Derrick Thomas.
"I'm greatly honored," Monk, who waited eight years to win election, said in a conference call. "I'm humbled to receive this honor. It's just a great honor when you think of the guys who have come before us."

The Washington Redskins
The Washington Redskins are a professional American football team based in the Washington, D.C. area. The team plays at FedExField in Landover, Maryland, which is in Prince George's County, Maryland. The team's headquarters and training facility are at Redskin Park in Ashburn, Virginia, a community in Loudoun County, Virginia near Dulles International Airport. They are members of the Eastern Division of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL).
According to Forbes Magazine, the Redskins are the second most valuable franchise in the NFL, valued at approximately $1.467 billion, having this year been surpassed by their rivals the Dallas Cowboys. Last year they generated over $300 million in revenue and netted over $60 million. They have also broken the NFL's mark for single-season attendance six years in a row.
Overall, the Redskins have played for eleven NFL Championships and have won five, including three of the five Super Bowls in which they have played. Four of the five Super Bowl appearances were under the leadership of Hall of Fame coach Joe Gibbs.
The Redskins are one of only two teams in the NFL with an official marching band. The other is the Baltimore Ravens. The Redskins were also one of the first teams to have a fight song, "Hail to the Redskins."
Joe Gibbs
Joe Jackson Gibbs (born November 25, 1940) is a Hall of Fame American football coach and NASCAR Championship team owner. He was the 20th and 26th head coach in the history of the Washington Redskins. Well known for his long hours and work ethic, Joe Gibbs has put together championship teams with many players who have had mediocre to average careers while playing for other NFL teams. During his first stint in the National Football League, he coached the Redskins for 12 seasons and led them to eight playoff appearances, four NFC Championship titles, and three Super Bowl titles. After retiring at the end of the 1992 season, he switched focus to his NASCAR team, Joe Gibbs Racing, which won three championships under his ownership. On January 7, 2004, Gibbs came out of retirement to rejoin the Redskins as head coach and team president, signing a 5-year, $28.5 million contract[http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=1702079 Gibbs' deal more lucrative than Spurrier's]. On January 8, 2008, Gibbs resigned as Redskins' head coach and team president. He will be staying on as "Special Advisor" to the team owner Daniel Snyder.ESPN - Gibbs cites pull of family obligations for retiring from Redskins - NFL.

Posted on May 9th, 2007 by Mr. Fumbles"Just as the groundhog's shadow foretells whether there will be six more weeks of winter, the outcome of the final home game of the Washington Redskins has been as an indicator of which political party would win the presidential election. If the Redskins won their last home game before Election Day, then the current party in power would win the election. If the Redskins lost, the opposing party would take over the White House.
Unfortunately, the Redskins' streak ended in 2004. Although they were defeated by the Green Bay Packers on Oct. 31, George W. Bush was reelected and the Republican Party retained control of the White House."
