Avoid Raster Graphics & Reduce SWF File Size
Compressing SWF File Size - Tip 1
Raster file formats like BMP, JPEG, and GIF, are defined by a series of pixels lined up in rows with color values applied to each individual pixel. Vector graphics on the other hand are mathematical definitions of shapes and lines used to construct your graphic. Because vector graphics are created from numbers and equations, they allow you to keep a completely scalable image.
The point is this. Because vector graphics are essentially just mathematical equations they produce a graphic that takes up little space in terms of storage and don't add much to the overall swf file size of your flash movie.
A lot of newbie Flash users make the mistake of utilizing their Photoshop skills and drop all those cool raster graphics into Flash. While a nice raster graphic used once in a while is totally ok, try to avoid using vector graphics and you will reduce Flash file size significantly.

Compress SWF Files by Changing the Quality of JPG Images
Flash Compression - Tip 2
Now, if you still want to add that cool JPG or GIF to your Flash movie, here is an easy way to at least decrease its size.
Press CTRL + L and open your Library. Locate your imported JPG file. Right click on it and go to properties. Now, Un-check "use imported JPEG data" and you will see that you can adjust the image quality. Use trial & error until you are satisfied with Look vs. File size.
Adjusting this setting can make a large difference in compressing swf files and reducing SWF file size.

Optimize Images to Reduce SWF Flash File Size
Tip 3
Using the Modify: Smooth, Straighten and Optimize commands on the menu bar to refine shapes and lines will also help to reduce swf file size. You can use these commands over and over again on a shape until you are happy with the level of swf compression as well as the look of the graphic.
Additionally, in Modify there is the Trace Bitmap command. This command converts a bitmap to a vector image, and often does a good job. Usually though, a GIF will convert better than a JPG. Play around with this command and observe how it affects different graphics.

Neat Tool to Reduce SWF File Size & Compress Flash
Best Compression Tool for Flash
Flash Optimizer is a really neat program for Flash animators, web designers, game developers, and basically anyone who is using Flash and wants to deliver a remarkable experience but is concerned about reducing the SWF size of their final work.This SWF compressor can reduce your SWF file size up to 70% because of the algorithms of vectors, shapes, morphing, Z-buffer, fonts, embedded video and other optimization it is pre-programmed with. It reduces the size of the whole SWF, including curves, zero-objects, applying ZLib optimization and many other neat techniques.

Reduce Flash File Size by Optimizing Sound
Compress SWF Files - Tip 4
Use MP3 compression, the smallest sound form.
Import your MP3 file.
Press CTRL + L and open your Library.
Right-click to bring up properties. Uncheck "use imported MP3 quality".
With this unchecked, you can change both the Bit Rate and Quality. You'll find that a lower Bit Rate and Quality reduces SWF file size while producing a sound that's still good for use.

Compressing SWF Flash Size By Limiting Fonts and Font Styles Use
Reduce SWF Size - Tip 5
You want to try to reduce the amount of fonts you use because the more fonts Flash must save in your SWF and the more fonts saved in your SWF file - the bigger the SWF file size will be.
Ok, so let's if you have a really cool font say that you've decided to use on a few buttons. In order for that font to be seen by people that don't have the font installed, you'll have to embed it. To do this, go to the character options for that font, where there will be the option to embed the entire font.
If all you want is the button to say "home", then there's no use in embedding the entire alphabet, just go to the input box that says, "and these characters" and type in "home" This way you're only storing 4 characters in your SWF file and reducing the SWF file size.

- In some cases using static text fields, in stead of dynamic text fields, can also help reducing the compiled swf file.

- Rowi, you are so right! I saved 50% file size by having switching to static text fields. Had no idea that mattered. Thank you. Best, Kasper

- You can Drastically reduce the size of an Image by using the Tracing Feature to convert Raster Image to Vector in Flash.
Steps:
1. Select the Image( that you have imported to Library) from the Library Panel and Drag it to the Stage.
2. Select the Image
3. Goto Modify --> Bitmap --> Trace Bitmap
In the Trace Bitmap Dialog Box
Select
Color Threshold --> 100
Minimum Area --> 10 Pixels
Curve Fit --> Very Tight
Corner Threshold --> Many Corners.
