How Reekoe's Room Began

Reekoe's Room Unique Gifts for Pet Lovers - 100% of Proceeds Donated to Animal Rescue

Reekoe's Room began in July 2007 as a way to generate more funds to help animal rescues.

The store's namesake was advertised in a local newspaper by a small-town humane society as an "energetic" young male cat needing a home. Apparently, by "energetic" what they really meant was insane. Reekoe is now a fat, lazy, happy cat, none the wiser as to what his fate could have been if he had not been adopted. We can't imagine our lives without him.

100% of proceeds from the sale of gift items at Reekoe's Room goes directly to helping pets in need.

We now carry dozens of gifts for pet lovers, cat lovers, and dog lovers, including t-shirts, sweatshirts, mugs, mousepads, clothing for kids, maternity wear, posters, greeting cards, buttons, magnets, bumper stickers, and MORE!

Our designs focus on promoting the adoption of shelter pets, ending animal cruelty, and promoting spay and neuter.

Feline Rescue, Inc. provides rescue and relief to the homeless and endangered cats in our community through programs that offer shelter, foster, social and medical rehabilitation, feral and stray management, spay/neuter subsidy, and community education.

The mission of Feline Rescue, Inc. is to provide safe shelter, veterinary care, and socialization for stray, abandoned, or abused cats until good permanent homes can be found for them.

Why Does Reekoe's Room Donate It's Proceeds?

9,589 shelter pets are killed every day in shelters across the country

There are simply not enough homes for all the pets in this country. Irresponsible owners, over-breeding, and apathy are the main reasons that we have such a huge pet over-population problem in the United States today.

Things are slowly but surely getting better. Rescue groups and shelters across the country are working hard to make a difference. These groups are in constant need of adoptive homes, volunteers, foster homes, donated items, and probably most of all, monetary donations.

Animal shelters and rescues are very good at making a dollar go a long way. They truly support each and every donation they receive. Every dollar counts!

For example:
*$5 will feed a cat for a month
*$10 will feed a dog for a month
*$15 will provide one pet with a rabies shot
*$25 will provide vaccinations for one pet
*$50 will rescue one puppy from the county pound
*$75 will rescue one adult animal from the pound
*$100 will spay or neuter one small animal
*$300 will cover annual shots, a heartworm test, office visit and spay or neuter one animal
*$500 will help cover the cost of a major surgery for a pet in need

Each month, Reekoe's Room selects a deserving animal shelter or rescue organization, and all the proceeds from the sale of items at Reekoe's Room for that month are donated to that organization.

In January 2009, Reekoe's Room supported Newnan-Coweta Humane Society.

The Newnan-Coweta Humane Society/Shelter Rescue is a Georgia state-licensed, non-profit 501(c)3 humane society.

Shelter Rescue was started in February 1997 with the focus of reducing the number of pets euthanized at local animal control facilities. This is accomplished by rescuing, arranging foster home space and finding homes for a limited number of these pets. Shelter Rescue also helps increase adoptions at the animal control facilities by publicizing these animals on our websites.

Shelter Rescue also knows the importance of working together with other rescue organizations in the area AND out of state. The rescue transport part of the organization is called "Waggin' Train".

In December 2008, Reekoe's Room supported Saving Shelter Pets, Inc..

Saving Shelter Pets, Inc., is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal welfare organization with members located throughout the United States and Canada.

Saving Shelter Pets works to eliminate euthanasia of healthy companion animals as a method of population control through rescue and transport, spay and neuter, and other innovative programs.

At this time, Saving Shelter Pets' primary focus is on high-kill shelters in Georgia. Georgia, and other areas in the Southeast, face a monumental pet overpopulation problem. Every day, thousands of perfectly adoptable animals are euthanized because there are simply not enough homes for them all. While many shelters in Georgia have made great strides toward ending the unnecessary killing of healthy pets, many shelters simply cannot handle the numbers of animals coming through their doors. Even worse, however, is that many shelters still use the gas chamber as a method of "euthanasia." This method of killing pets has been almost universally condemned as inhumane. SSP strives to end the unnecessary euthanization of companion animals through both long range programs and rescue efforts aimed at those pets in imminent danger of euthanization. Though its Rescue and Transportation program, Saving Shelter Pets has rescued hundreds of dogs and cats from imminent death and transported them to wonderful no-kill rescues and sanctuaries in other areas. From there, these pets are adopted into loving new homes.

SSP has a wonderful intervention program called Puppy Promises that keeps litters of unwanted puppies out of the shelters and spays the mother dog.

SSP also has a wonderful Spay and Neuter program providing spay and neuter assistance in several counties in Georgia, and recently, in Ohio, as well. Spaying and Neutering is the KEY to ending the pet overpopulation problem.

Heartworm is an immense problem in the South, and Saving Shelter Pets started a unique program called Bernie's Buddies that helps pay for the expensive treatment required to cure heartworms in dogs that are rescued by SSP.

Second Chance Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3), all-volunteer organization that incorporated in 1994. Second Chance Animal Rescue is dedicated to rescuing, caring for and placing homeless dogs and cats. Second Chance also educates the public on respect for all animal life, including the importance of spaying and neutering in order to reduce the number of healthy animals euthanized.

The mission of Second Chance Animal Rescue is to provide homeless dogs and cats with a second chance at life and companionship. The organization goes beyond the confines of shelter walls to build an extensive network of knowledgeable, experienced, talented and caring individuals focused on: 1) Quality animal care and services; 2) Animal welfare education; 3)Positive people/animal relationships; and 4)Cooperative rescue efforts.

Based in White Bear Lake, Minnesota, Second Chance Animal Rescue is the organization that rescued, cared for, and fostered my second fur-child, Eddie, before he became part of my family.

Winging Cat Rescue consists of a wonderful group of cat lovers from across the United States who work incessantly to end the needless euthanization of healthy, adoptable cats. Cats are euthanized at an alarming rate because too many owners do not take responsibility for their cats, and too many are allowed to breed indiscriminately. There are simply not enough homes for them all.

Winging Cat Rescue focuses most of its efforts on a county animal control shelter in Griffin, Georgia, which still uses the gas chamber as its method of "euthanasia." Thanks to the tireless efforts of WCR the euthanization rate for healthy cats has been reduced from about 95% to about 5%.

In the short term, Winging Cat Rescue raises funds to rescue cats from death row, vet them, board them, then transport them to adoption centers and sanctuaries in the Northeast, or adopt them out locally.

As part of its long-term goals, Winging Cat Rescue also sponsors low-cost spay and neuter clinics, spay and neuter certificates, and vaccines for animal control shelters.

HOW YOU CAN HELP!

It takes roughly $170-$190 to sponsor one cat, including pull fees, vetting, s/n, shots, boarding, and transport.

In September 2008, Reekoe's Room supported Cause for Paws.

Cause for Paws is a Minnesota nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization founded in 1998. It is a small all-volunteer group of friends who love cats. The main focus of Cause for Paws is helping stray and abandoned cats and kittens find loving, permanent homes. These are the cats and kittens one would find at many animal control facilities; discarded pets who had been doing their best to survive outside, hanging around neighborhoods and city parks. Cause for Paws assists approximately 200 cats a year and its work is entirely funded by donations.

In addition to rescuing cats, Cause for Paws sponsors two community outreach programs dedicated to helping low-income families procure low/no-cost spay/neuter surgeries for their pets.

In August 2008, Reekoe's Room supported Retrieve A Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM). Retrieve A Golden of Minnesota (RAGOM) has been rescuing golden retrievers since 1985. It all started with one homeless Golden Retriever whose time was up at a shelter. With an ever-growing group of volunteers, RAGOM has rehomed over 3,000 Golden Retrievers since 1985.

In July 2008, Reekoe's Room supported A Rotta Love Plus. A Rotta Love Plus is a all-volunteer 501(c)(3) foster-based dog rescue. A Rotta Love Plus is a dedicated to the Rottweiler, American Pit Bull Terrier and other non-traditional breeds. A Rotta Love Plus exists to rescue the unwanted & neglected Rottweilers & American Pit Bull Terriers surrendered to local animal shelters. With the help of foster homes ALRP then evaluates the dogs and prepares them to be re-homed with a loving family. ARLP also provides education on responsible ownership and the truth about these majestic breeds. The Rottweiler & American Pit Bull Terrier have fallen victim to bad press and prejudice. A Rotta Love Plus defends and protects these wonderful breeds.

Last Hope, Inc., located in Farmington, Minnesota, is a all-volunteer 501(c)(3) foster-based animal rescue. The mission of Last Hope, Inc. is to save abandoned, unwanted and helpless animals from euthanasia, to promote the end of overpopulation through education and the neutering/spaying of all rescued animals six months and older, to provide medical care as needed for rescued animals from intake to emergency stabilization and life saving surgery to ensure a high quality of life, to find good, loving homes for our animals through adoption, and to educate the public in the responsible care of animals

Fran's Pet Haven is a tiny not-for-profit rescue organization located in Breaux Bridge, LA. Fran's Pet Haven is dedicated to helping improve the lives of Southern pets, particularly those located at the St. Martin Parish Animal Control facility.

In March 2008, Reekoe's Room supported Adopt-A-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead.

Adopt-A-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead is a non-profit, completely volunteer-run organization with the primary goal of placing rescued pets in loving and responsible homes. Adopt-A-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead is dedicated to keeping its animals happy and healthy.

The organization receive no government financial support. Adopt-A-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead relies solely on private donations to keep operating. Private donations, fundraising events, and adoption fees help pay for food, medical supplies, and veterinary expenses incurred every month.

All of Adopt-A-Pet of Fargo-Moorhead's animals are under its care until a permanent home can be found, no matter how long it takes.

Did you Know????
Each year hundreds of cats and dogs are euthanized. In 2006, 1291 cats were admitted to the Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead pounds, and 574 of them were euthanized. In 2006, 979 dogs were admitted to the pounds, and 112 were euthanized. These numbers do not account for the large numbers who die on the streets or are hit by cars. Please spay or neuter your pets.
