Drop me a line -- Familiar with Reflex Blue?

I'll bet you love the Reflex Blue color!

From the lens Beautiful Color of Reflex Blue.

Were you familiar with reflex blue, the color, and any difficulties with printing? Are you a fan of this color? What I want to know is this ... if it is difficult to achieve a true reflex blue color and/or it takes a while to dry, why are there so many logos using reflex blue???

This is an interesting idea for a lens. I am an artist and I agree with the other artist it looks like ultramarine blue. I want to also thank you once again for liking another one of my lenses.
  • lestroischenes May 20, 2012 @ 3:14 pm | delete
.... and such a specific colour at that.
  • lestroischenes May 20, 2012 @ 3:14 pm | delete
What a very interesting lens, Julie! I'm a painter and not really into printing. Looks a bit like ultramarine. I love the way you've built a lens around a colour.

I was not at all aware of this color, reflex blue, and the difficulties with printing. What a wonderful presentation you gave. It certainly is beautiful. It makes the best skies. :)

A great color indeed and one I tend to use a lot in graphics. Of course I'm dealing with a digital process and sublimation printing so drying is not an issue as it is with offset.

I like reflex blue. I wasn't really familiar with the name at first but I know that I have noticed a lot of advertising using it. Good lens!

I cannot deny the positive effect of some of the Rainbow colors, reflex blue certainly is a color to choose. I would love this color on pottery and ceramic.

Because it's eye catching and makes us feel good, like staring out at a calm ocean on a sunny day. I once produced all of the marketing materials for a non-profit whose primary color was reflex blue. Because we were a non-profit, we depended almost entirely on volunteers for design, research and sometimes writing the copy for our publications. If the printer wanted the layout by Tuesday, I was lucky to have the final copy in my hands on Wednesday. I learned just how difficult it is to get a rush job from the printer when your cover bleeds reflex blue all the way to the edges. Oy. Vey.

Somehow, I keep ending up on "blue" lenses this morning! :) Reflex blue is beautiful...it's a very eye-catching color. Must be why so many logos use it!

Alright a Lens on a Shade of Blue, especially since Blue is my Favorite Color! :)
  • skiesgreen Feb 14, 2012 @ 7:18 pm | delete
This is so interesting as there is nothing in the normal art world that I know of which highlights this factor related to the colour. Thanks for bringing it to our attention and for being a great squid. Blessed and featured on Blessed by Skiesgreen 2012.. Hugs

It looks like Ultramarine Violet in the painting world, but that dries on the faster side. There are some paints that take a very long time to dry though, like reflex blue does in the printing world. A lot of the lead based paints have this problem. Interesting stuff Julie!

Very clever, simple designs - Lovely
  • kathysart Feb 11, 2012 @ 11:31 am | delete
I confess Julie that when I saw the title of this lens I just got a HUGE SMILE on my face and then started laughing. The reason was because I thought to myself.. WOW how INVENTIVE of her! A lens on a certain color? YOU ROCK! Coming from an artist's perspective... of course I was drawn to it and thought too.. WELL YAY! Interesting that Reflex Blue is a SLOW drying ink.. wow, darn interesting. I know with oil painting some reds take forever to dry. I am going to pay more attention to some of my blues. Angel blessed.. for sure you are mega creative!

Beautiful blue.Great Lens. Thanks for sharing.
  • efriedman Feb 4, 2012 @ 1:48 pm | delete
Reflex blue is a very attractive color and sets off other things well if used in the background. Maybe that is why it's used so often in logos. Or, some logos use it because OTHER logos use it :-)
  • sukkran Feb 2, 2012 @ 9:48 pm | delete
love all shades of blue. but this dark blue-rb-is mesmerizing. thanks for the info.
  • LaraineRose Feb 2, 2012 @ 7:56 pm | delete
Beautiful picture! The white daisy makes the blue look even bluer.
I am so happy to find this lens. I submitted it for a quest.

You've done amazingly well to produce such an interesting lens from a subject such as Pantone Reflex Blue! As for why it's such a popular colour choice, well puzzlemaker hit the nail squarely on the head! And yes, blues do taker longer to dry.
  • Heather426 Aug 21, 2011 @ 6:21 pm | delete
Well I love blue of any hue, and this reflex blue is beautiful! What an interesting idea for a lens!
  • gogolf162 Jul 6, 2011 @ 11:45 am | delete
I did not know there was a reflex blue. Sounds like a gagging action to me. I would have thought with a name like reflex, it would be hard to look at.
  • puzzlemaker Feb 13, 2011 @ 7:09 am | delete
OMG Julie, I NEVER thought I'd see a lens on Reflex Blue! That's a blast from the past! I worked in the printing industry for about 12 years and am very familiar with Reflex Blue. It was the go-to blue for lots of projects. Then I kinda got tired of looking at it :-) and liked 540 better (or was it 541?). Lots of customers drooled over the teal 321! Reflex is used on lots of logos because it comes pre-mixed. Simply dipping the ink out of a can and into the press makes it easy for press operators therefore making it a cheap color option. When I was helping customers who wanted a blue, they chose the $20 blue (reflex) over the had-to-specially-mixed $40 blues almost every time. So many customer use it, it's often left on the press all day etc. etc. Very neat article!
