Ranked #13,763 in Healthy Living, #216,841 overall

Foot massage is good for you!

According to the National Institutes of Health, most migraine sufferers start seeing symptoms between the ages of 10 and 45. They also note that more women than men get them and some women report less migraines when they are pregnant. Migraines also tend to run in the family.

An interesting study out of Denmark in 2006 showed that migraine sufferers who practice reflexology are less likely to suffer the debilitating results of a migraine headache. The problem is that most people don't really know what reflexology really is. This lens will help explain that and hopefully help migraine sufferers suffer less.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology followers believe that there is a point on the bottom of the foot that corresponds to every part of the body. Reflexology is a massage technique, although not all massage therapists practice reflexology. By massaging and stimulating these points, Reflexologists can relieve pain, tension, and stress in the related part of the body.

Reflexolgy and Migraines Study Results

The Danish study involved a mix of chronic tension headache sufferers and those suffering migraines. About 90% of those in the study said they took prescription medicine in the month prior to the study that was specifically for headaches. After the study was completed, almost 20% of those who took part were able to stop taking their medications for their headaches. This was due to the use of reflexology since no other medicine or treatments were given.

In the study, patients did a course of six to eight treatments followed by monthly follow-up treatments for six more months. When the study was over almost 25% of the participants said they no longer had headaches and considered themselves completely cured. Another 55% noted that they felt much better, and their headaches were less severe and less frequent. A full 78% of the participants in the study reported that their condition improved.

Does It Last?

There was a follow-up three months after the study concluded and 23% of the people with migraines said they were cured. Another 41% reported that they had an improved qualtiy of life. They researchers found that the best results were obtained when treating younger patients and those with a shorter history of migraines.
