Ancient Egyptians & Reflexology

Ancient Egyptians

Historians believe that reflexology was a practice that was common amongst the ancient Egyptians.

A painting was discovered in the tomb of Ankhmahor (highest official after the Pharaoh) at Saqqara, known as the physicians' tomb.

The painting shows people applying pressure to each others feet, much like modern Relexologists do today.

Ancient Chinese

Ancient Chinese

Reflexology is thought to be influenced by acupuncture & acupressure, which the Chinese have practiced for thousands of years.

Both therapies recognize that applying pressure to certain areas of the body, effect & balance the flow of energy.

History of Reflexology - Zone Therapy

Zone Therapy - Fitzgerald & Bowers
In 1917 Dr.Fitzgerald (an ENT Doctor) & his colleague Dr.Edwin Bowers published a book called "Zone therapy".

Dr. Edwin Bowers, was a medical critic and writer, who was initially skeptical of Dr.Fitzgerald claims. He investigated his findings discovered the validity of Zone therapy. Dr. Fitzgerald & Dr.Bowers later became colleagues

Fitzgerald & Bowers used the data they had collected to map the body into five zones.

The zones run from the foot to the head on each side of the body, starting with the big toe as zone one through to the little toes as zone five.

They discovered that a disturbance in one part of the Zone caused a dysfunction in all of the organs situated in that zone.

They used pegs & other implements to apply pressure to the zones in the hands & feet.

History of Reflexology - Eunice Ingham

Eunice Ingham

Eunice Ingham continued to develop Zone Therapy.

She felt that the use of thumb & finger pressure was more effective than the tools (pegs, combs etc.) used by Fitzgerald & Bowers.

Ingam preferred to work with feet as they were at the end of the zones & that they have a larger surface area than the hands

Ingham used Fitzgerald's maps to create foot reflexology charts. Eunice published two book titled: "Stories the feet can call" & "Stories the feet have told". She went on to treat patients, lecture & teach students.

What is Reflexology?

What is Reflexology

Reflexology is a gentle type of massage therapy that is applied to the feet & hands to treat the whole body.

Reflexology is a unique therapy that releases congestion & blockage in any part of the body through gently massaging & manipulating a point in the feet (called reflex points).

There are several reflexes in the feet & each reflex corresponds with an organ or area of the body.

Reflexology helps to heal the body of chronic ailments & can greatly improve the symptoms of disease. It also has a positive effect on the emotions & general well being.

The benefits of Reflexology can be applied to anyone! It's a non-evasive therapy & can therefore be administered anywhere, from the living room, on the beach or in a therapy room.

The gentle, non-intrusive nature of reflexology means that it can help a number of medical conditions without worsening the symptoms, as there are no side effect to this therapy
