Understanding Marketing vs Advertising

The best way to distinguish between advertising and marketing is to think of Marketing as a pie, inside that pie you have slices of advertising, branding, consumer research, strategic planning, public relations, messaging, web design, event marketing, social media, sales strategy, community involvement, and many others. Advertising is one piece of the pie..the most famous part, yes, because it showcases all the other work through paid media. But it carries a lot of the main ingredients with it.

Before You Spend a Dime on Advertising, You must first....

Identify
Reformation Productions' process is to identify the client's target market(s) first and foremost. Sometimes the client has done previous work and knows exactly who their audience is, sometimes it takes a bit of uncovering. Another aspect of Identify is to really discuss and uncover who the client is. What is the brand image you are presenting to the public? How is the public receiving your image? And sometimes, it is even necessary to identify who your competitors are, what their marketing efforts are, what the public's perception of your competition is, and how your company compares within the marketplace.

Once we have identified the target, we often ask them, directly, what the best way to speak to them would be. Experience has taught us that properly identifying your target audience (who your consumers are) and then speaking to them in ways they are most comfortable and receptive produce the greatest return on investment. We seek to find out who they really are, what makes them tick, and where we could find other potential consumers that fit their same profile. This can often be accomplished through man-on-the-street interviews, telephone or web surveys, focus groups, or through other forms of research.

Think
With the target identified and the best ways to reach them determined, we then evaluate a business' opportunities and needs, and then make recommendations based on those observances. Sometimes these are obvious. Other times, there are some needs and opportunities that are hidden below the surface and can be uncovered within a few meetings. Our recommendations are then presented to the client to ensure we are all on the same page.

Once the client agrees with the scope of the project, the budget, and the timeline, our team dives into building the best creative for the client's objectives that we will use to Speak to the consumer, at all times within the agreed budget and timeline. It is our policy to never grow a project outside of the budget or timeline without client directive...and best is ALWAYS our goal. Once the creative is presented to the client, there can be a few tweaks and minor changes that are accomplished in post-production. Then, once the creative is signed off on by the client, we move forward into implementation - getting your creative to work for you. Every project is different, but that implementation could include ad placement with recommended media, posting video throughout the web, launching a website, sending a specialty to duplication, etc.
