Aquarium Refugium With Rio Powerhead

Also included is a Rio powerhead to keep water circulating through the refugium, for the best gas exchange and benefit.

Reef Aquarium Refugium Uses

What a refugium is used for

Reef aquarium refugium

Besides being a "jail" or "timeout" area for naughty fish and invertebrates, refugiums are often used to raise macroalgae and other creatures that contribute to the health and stability of reef aquariums. For instance, macroalgae improve oxygen levels in the aquarium and help filter the water.

Refugium Plants and Algae

Plants and algae for refugiums

  • caulerpa algaeCaulerpa releases vitamins and amino acids necessary for a healthy reef aquarium, and also provides a nutrient-rich and important food source for vegetarian fish such as tangs and other creatures.

  • red Gracilaria algae Red Gracilaria is very healthy for fish, and helps to cure lateral line erosion and is rich in calcium.

  • chaetomorpha algae Chaetomorpha Is a great macroalgae for refugiums because it removes phosphates and nitrates from the aquarium water.

I'm setting up a 10g or a 20 reef tank (still deciding). I've heard a lot of good things about having a refugium for a reef tank. I would like to get.

Do you have an in-tank refugium?

Do you prefer in-tank or hang-on?

You've got a point there. I removed the part about using an in-tank fuge as a QT area. Thanks for your input!

I have 2 in tank refugiums that work great. I disagree with using them as quarantine. The purpose of a QT tank is to keep parasites out of the main tank. Using the in-tank refugium allows the parasites right into the main tank. Great for macroalgae NOT quarantine
