(Click Ben's eyes and save lots of money!)

Here are 7 reasons why you should buy a refurbished plasma television instead of a new one.
  1. You really, really, really want a new plasma TV, but the economy sucks right now.
  2. You've just got to have a wide screen for a movie-theater experience at home, but the economy sucks right now.
  3. You sometimes need to view the TV from a slanted angle and you don't like distortion, but the economy sucks right now.
  4. You want to display HDTV and DTV signals in addition to XGA, SVGA, and VGA signals from computers, but the economy sucks right now.
  5. You're in love with vibrant colors, deep darks and true-to-life pictures, but the economy sucks right now.
  6. You want to mount a TV on your wall or otherwise save space from your bulky old-style TV, but the economy sucks right now.
  7. You are a high-quality couch potato with high-end tastes, but the economy sucks right now.
In short, you want to save money. (Go on... Click on the image!)

And the economy sucks right now.

Plasma and LCD TVs

Both are flat and thin. Both offer widescreen HDTV. Both are cool. So what's the difference?

Technology, that's what

A plasma TV has neon and xenon gas between glass panels. Electricity runs through it and produces plasma, an ionized gas, which means a gas with a lot of the electrons moving about freely instead of being bound to atoms and molecules. The plasma, in turn, excites red, green, and blue phosphors and causes them to emit light in groups forming pixels (picture elements). These are combined to make a high-quality television image.

An LCD TV has pixels made out of liquid crystal material between layers of polarizing filter film and glass substrates with electrodes. When current goes through the liquid crystal material, it aligns with the electrical field and then allows light to pass or blocks it. A separate source then sends light to it to bounce off or go through. Technical advances like multiplexing, dichroic dyes, dynamic scattering of nematic liquid crystals and twisted nematic field effect, produce the high-quality television picture we know today.

How's all that for some big honking brain-twisting?

Compared Benefits - Plasma TV and LCD TV

Here are some of the respective benefits of Plasma versus LCD TVs:

LCD TV - Benefits

  • Less power use than plasma
  • Less heat from the light source than plasma
  • No radiation emission from the screen
  • No burn-in from static images, as occurs with plasma
  • Does not make noise at high altitudes like some plasmas
  • Display weighs less than equivalent plasma display
  • Less fragile than plasma
  • Better than plasma for computer input and video gaming

Plasma TV - Benefits

  • Better contrast ratio than LCD
  • Richer colors than LCD, with better accuracy and saturation
  • Deeper blacks than LCD
  • Better motion tracking than LCD, with hardly any blurring during fast action
  • Better than LCD for viewing at angles
  • Rarely has the dead pixel problem that sometimes afflicts LCD

As the price is very close, a choice between them depends more on what else is going on in your life than quality per se. One thing is for sure. The choice is between great and great, or really cool and really cool.
