HERE'S WHAT I THINK

Regional Management Plan for Tarpon

Tarpon are a migratory fish that tend to culminate in the vast waters of the Florida coastline. Not all states or countries have a very stringent management plan for this wonderful game species. Since they are not a species of fish that are found as table fare and are simply more of a game fish, there should be a contingency around this fishery that is regional/country specific. Both Florida and Texas have laws protecting this industry that are much more stringent than say neighboring Louisiana or Mexico

Tarpon Issues At Hand

Why?

  • Genetic research indicates a single large tarpon stock
  • Tarpon migrate from the Caribbean through the Gulf of Mexico and most of the southern and eastern United States
  • Tarpon live a long time, some over 70 years
  • Vulnerability to harvesting because they are a slow growing species
  • A catch-and-release tarpon fishery could provide and does provide a substantial amount of money to the US economy alone

So what does this all mean? Tarpon live a long time and come from a single stock and abound to vast amounts of waters so I think it should fall under some form of regional management plan.
