Other tips to boost Windows performance
All tips you can use to improve your PC experience.
- Disk defragmentation
This is caused by installation and uninstallation of new programs by you, and also by the updates provided by Microsoft. Use the disk fragmentation utility. You can start this by:
1. Open My Computer.
2. Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3. On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4. Click Defragment. - Software updates
Update your Windows Operating Software regularly. You can do this manually (Start > Windows update) or enable automatic updates for Windows.
Also check if there are software updates for your hardware like drivers for your videocard or motherboard. - Disable services
Windows starts with almost everything enabled by default. Usually you do not need everything. For example if you do not have a wireless connection you will not need this in your PC software. All services are run constantly by Windows and eat up resources.
I've wrote a good guide here about what to disable.
Disable services - Turning off harddrive indexing.
This is also enabled by default in Windows. It makes an index of all the files on your harddrive to speed up file searching. Besides hogging system resources harddrive space and memory you hardly ever need this. Unless you often search for files.
Open "My Computer" or press the Windows key and E. Then right click on each of the drives and select properties. Uncheck the box that says "Allow the indexing service to index this disk for fast file searching" under the General tab. In the pop up window select the box that says "Apply change to (drive letter):\, subfolders and files" and click on ok. After you have done each drive I would recommend to reboot. - Microsoft Bootvis.
Microsoft BootVis is a program which analyzes your system during the startup of Windows and can optimize start up and shutdown times. It was originally developed for developers to analyze boot times and see where there are slowdowns. You can download BootVis here. I believe its only for Windows XP. - Microsoft PowerToys puts Windows XP on steriods. You can download Microsoft PowerToys here.
