Best Registry Defragmenter
Ranked #3,161 in Computers & Electronics, #63,108 overall
What Is Registry Defragmentation?
The registry is one of the most important parts of Windows OS. It keeps track of the system settings and saves information about every installed application. As a result it is constantly modified and increasing in size. Over time the system registry accumulates a lot of unneeded leftover fragments and unused information from software that you have long since uninstalled. The most obvious effect of a fragmented registry is a slow and unresponsive computer. Sometimes it can even result in system crashes and errors!
A registry defragmenter performs several maintenance operations. First of all, it removes unused and unneeded entries, cleaning up the clutter. It also compacts the registry and return the logical linear structure to it. A registry defrag results in a faster registry access time and more responsive applications. Professional registry optimization software will not only do that but also fix registry errors. That's why it is important to choose the best registry defragmenter from the wide array of software available. See our top recommendation below.

Best Registry Defragmenter and Compactor
When it comes to registry defragmentation, no software does it better than TuneUp Utilities. You will be able to reliably clean and compact your registry with just one click. This software is much more than just a registry defragmenter, however. Like the name suggests it includes utilities for tuning up your system, such as a disk defragmenter, startup and shutdown optimizer, broken shortcut finder, disk cleaner and more. Here are some of it's features:
- Maintain System - one click and your PC runs like new! TuneUp Utilities can perform disk and registry defragmentation, registry clean-up, startup optimization and more.
- Increase Performance - a noticeable boost for your work and games. The new "Turbo Mode" disables unneeded applications, concentrating the performance of your PC on the active task.
- Customize Windows - give your Windows a cool personalized look and change over 400 hidden settings.
What Causes Registry Errors?
As mentioned before, Windows registry is a database which stores all the OS settings and the information about hardware and software installed on your computer. This means that every time you install a new application it makes several new registry entries - and it doesn't necessarily remove them all on uninstall! These unneeded fragments accumulate in your registry until they are removed by proper software.
Run the registry defragmenter after you uninstall a program to make sure all it's entries in the registry are safely removed. Running TuneUp Utilities once a week is fine if you do not install new software very frequently. Besides maintaining the optimal performance of your registry, you should also take steps to secure your computer:
- Use a modern browser like Firefox or Chrome to surf the net. You can also install the NoScript Firefox extension for increased security.
- Good anti-spyware
and antivirus
programs will protect your computer against most existing malware. (Sadly 100% protection does not exist).
- A good firewall like the popular ZoneAlarm
will secure your PC from hackers and online malware attacks which exploit OS and browser vulnerabilities.
- If you have some important files on your computer, it's best to backup them to a separate location like an USB key or a secure online storage like Mozy
(it's free).

- Mozy is very good, and gives you peace of mind. If you're going to pay for their service (you can get up to 2 Gb free) then use the coupon code EMMA to save 15% if you want MozyHome, and EMMA15 to save 15% on MozyPro!

- TuneUp is great stuff. Very easy to use. I got it off TBP few days ago LOL. My only annoyance is that it creates it's own system service which starts with Windows and you can't remove it at all unless you uninstall the proggy itself. Not like it uses a lot of RAM or anything, but still...
