W.O.R.C. - Working On Revitalizing Camden
What is Non-Profit Organization in the first place?
An organization whose primary goal is to support some issue or personal matter of interest or public concern (such as the arts, charities, education, politics, religion, research, or some other endeavor) for non-commercial purposes.
NGO = Non Governmental Organization (these are often similar type organizations registered overseas).
We are accepting applications for board members. If you are intersested, email worccamden@aol.com.
Have you thought about a career in a non-profit organization?
CareerBuilder.com has a section for Non-Profit job hunters, make a difference at work! You can get free trips all over the world and help people at the same time.
Do you want to start a non-profit organization?
The best place to start is through networking with like minded people and then downloading the IRS application at www.irs.gov, click on Charities & Non-Profits. You'll need to do the following:
1. Download and complete Form SS-4, "Application for Employer Identification Number" or call 1-800-829-4933. You can fill it out on-line too!
2. Download and complete Form 1023, "The Application for Recognition of Exemption."
Note that most non-profits that are not a church or similar type organization will want exemption as a 501 (c) (3) organization. Read more information about the various designations and instructions for your state in:
- Publication 557, Tax-Exempt Status for Your Organization
- Publication 4220, Applying for 501(c)(3) Tax-Exempt Status
- Publication 1635, Understanding Your EIN
Remember non profit does not mean that the company makes NO MONEY. We are not in business solely FOR PROFIT. Thank you!
Don't forget to download Form 990 - Return of Organization Exempt From Income Tax
You can have your designation as a tax-exempt organization REVOKED if you do NOT supply this form. It's embarassing and posted online for all to see!
You'll need a mission and vision statement.
You'll need organizational by-laws.
You'll need a business plan.
You'll need a marketing plan.
You'll need a fundraising plan. There are laws governing the solicitation of funds that vary from state to state. Usually, before launching a campaign you have to notify a particiular either the Department of Revenue or Department of Commerce.
You'll need a bank account.
You'll need a slogan.
Try not to ask for donations but ask for "charitable contributions."
You'll need a balance sheet with current assets or financial projections for the 2 - 5 years into the future.
You'll need a non profit mailing permit. For more information on eligibility, contact the U.S. Postal Service and ask for Publication 417, Nonprofit Standard Mail Eligibility.
You'll need to register the non-profit as a business entity usually a corporation. There are a few states that allow sole propietors to be a non-profit entity such as Pennsylvania.
You have two years and two months to apply to the IRS for Non Profit Status from that date the organization is formally established.
