Reiki was first discovered and presented by Mikao Usui in 1922. He spent 21 days fasting, praying, and meditating on Mount Kurama and through mystical revelation was given the knowledge and power for the application of what we now call Reiki.

Later, in April of 1922, Mikao Usui founded the Usui Reiki Ryoho Gakkai (Usui Reiki Healing Society) in Tokyo.

Initially, Usui taught the secrets of Reiki to over 2,000 students, 16 of whom reached the level of Shinpiden, which is equivalent to "Master Level" in English.
