Buddhism and Reincarnation

Do you believe in reincarnation? If not then you might want to read this lens. Reincarnation is originally a Buddhist concept. The Buddha was believed be able to see thousands of previous lifetimes after he achieved enlightenment. Buddhists believe that your actions in your current life determine who or what you will be in your next life.

In Buddhism the wheel of karma is a very absolute law, there is no transcending or escaping your karma. In Buddhism you can even regress in cosciousness and come back as an animal or a plant in your next life if you don't do enough good deeds in your current life. If you are anything like me then this concept may not appeal very much to you. However this is just the start, so read on....

Reincarnation-Are You A Believer?

Brian Weiss grew up in a stable home, went to good universities and got his dream job. He was a scientist and believed in what his senses told him. As a psychiatrist he believed in the traditional methods and therapy that was used to heal people. However that all changed when a patient of his could not be helped by these methods.

As a last resort to help this patient who suffered from incessant panic attacks and nightmares he decided to try hypnosis. This event would forever change his career and outlook on life. At first he was sceptical of what occured next. But after the woman that he was treating started channeling revelations from 'the other side' about his family and dead son he became a believer. What followed was nothing short of astonishing.

His patient would go from one lifeime to the next under hypnosis and in this way she eventually became healed. I won't give away the whole story here but what I will say is that there is more then enough proof here for past lives if you are a person who find all of this a little hard to believe. Among other things she spoke in languages under hypnosis which she couldn't speak in her current life and mentioned things about countries she has never been in which was later verified as true.

All in all a very interesting read. As you could expect this event drastically altered the life of Brain Weiss and he since became an author of many bestselling books. The first of these books was a case study of this patient he cured through past life hypnosis called Many Lives, Many Masters. During the hypnosis the patient travelled from one lifetime to the next and inbetween these lives channeled the voice of an unknown enitity which always spoke with wisdom and taught important lessons.

Brian Weiss since treated many more patients succesfully with this method and became an expert in the field. He conducts seminars and workshops around the world and training for professionals. He is Chairman Emeritus of Psychiatry at the Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami and maintains a private practice in Miami.

We are spiritual beings having a human experience.

Where Does Karma Fit In?

A question that often gets asked about karma is how it influences us from one lifetime to the next and there can be a lot of confusion about the subject. Does this mean everyone has to go to Dr. Weiss to solve their issues from past lives? My answer is no, not neccesarily. If it is something you want to try then be my guest.

But as someone who have dealt with a lot of blocks and emotional issues in my own life I dont believe its all important. People often ask what are they supposed to do about karma from past lives. I think the web of karma is very complex and that there is no action that doesn't cause a reaction. It goes on forever, or so it seems anyway. I believe the best thing is to deal with the present moment, and not be let past karma worry you.

You don't have to know where your karma comes from in order to solve it, although it might help in some cases. I have worked through most of the negative karma in my life and trust me their was a lot. And I never delved into past lives either. So don't let the thought of karma confuse you. Karma is good because it allows us to have control over our own destinies. By acting in a loving and peaceful way you create a loving and peaceful future for yourself.

Having said that karma is not absolute, good things happen to bad people and vice versa. Karma can also be viewed as sin, and as such can be 'forgiven'. This is the same as grace, the process by which karma can be transcended. Seen in this way karma is not an absolute, it can be overridden by devine power. But devine power is not always under our control, not yet anyway.

I know I have gone into quite some detail here and the discussion can become complex, but really it's not that complex. The best thing you can take away from karma is to live in the present and create positive karma for yourself from now on. Being aware of karma and observing the workings of it in your own life will already make a difference. All truth will be revealed in due time. In the mean time enjoy your life in the present and remember the words of the biggest teacher of them all: "Seek and you shall find."

Karma affects us all wether we like it or not. All of us have at some point exerienced the effect of our actions, wether that was good or bad. The best thing one can do is to take positive and harmonius actions which will create a future of happiness and peace.

Reincarnation-A Closer Look

By now you might believe in reincarnation but it's still a foreign concept to you and you don't really see the point of it. Many people find this strange concept and I believe Buddism is partly to blame for that. By saying that you can regress in consciousness, for example going from human to animal from one lifetime to the next, they fill the idea with a certain amount of fear.

While I have nothing against Buddism per se, it is still a religion, and religion tends to be dogmatic. Lets assume for a minute reincarnation is a fact. How much sense does it make to go from from human to animal in two concecutive lifetimes anyway? Isn't life always evolving and changing for the better? In the bigger picture it always is, even if things may look like they are changing for the worse in the short run.

In lieu with this fact it doesn't make much sense that you would turn into an animal or a tree in your next life. It's actually a bit silly to be honest. But then again religion has always seemed a bit silly to me. Much better to use my God given brain and logic. Anoher thing I use my brain for is when deciding whether reincarnation exist or not. It seems pretty obvious to me that we should have more then one life.

Believing only in one lifetime is like believing there is only intelligent life on earth in the whole infinite universe. It would be arrogant to an absurd degree to assume something like that. You might say that you just don't know, but that won't help you much either in solving the mystery of life. When I first became aware of reincarnation it was a foreign concept to me like any new concept, but soon it made a lot more sense then just having one life.

Lets face it, not many people will like the idea of becoming another person from one lifetime to the next. We all become attached to our current personalities and we feel safe with it. But at closer inspection if we look at how much we change from when we are a toddler to a teenager and then to an adult for instance it's almost like two different people. In a certain sense the toddler dies to make way for the teenager, and the teenager dies to make way for the adult. Dying and incarnating into another lifetime is just a step further.

Human's have so much potential if you are aware enough look a little deeper then surface appearances. There is so much potential for love and beauty and creativity that one lifetime seems odd to me now. How can a human being achieve it's full potential in a single lifetime? So really its just a matter of opening your mind and being open to new possibilities. If you don't believe in reincarnation I am definitely not here to make you believe in it. But you may be someone who has wondered and wanted some more information on it.

At the level of the soul we will always remain the same and be connected to the source, but in order for our souls to experience life and evolve it is neccesary to make creative leaps into new lifetimes.

Do You Believe In Reincarnation?

Yes, reincarnation exist but not in the way we think. Time and space is essentially an illusion with all things happening at the same time. As long as you are caught in the web of karma time will seem real to you, and you will keep incarnating into the next lifetime.
