How I Came to Believe in Reincarnation

Reincarnation-Fact or Fiction? The concept of reincarnation has fascinated me since I was a teenager, and I have been studying the evidence ever since. I have to admit the idea of it on the surface sounds like a bizarre idea. But so does the idea of an afterlife at all, really, at least to me.

In the early days of the Christian Church reincarnation was still a widely held concept, and was only removed later in one of the Pope's declarations. Many other religions hold the idea as a central tenant. What do you think? Where do you stand? Yes or No? Fact or Fiction? Undecided?

I think the spirit lives on and that sometimes the spirit takes on new forms. Even quantum physics supports this! So it is my belief. Read on for why, and to express your opinion. Please be civil...you wouldn't want any bad karma, would you?

My First Encounter with the Idea of Reincarnation

There is a River by Thomas Sugrue

A weathered paperback that fell off my friend's bed introduced me to the "sleeping prophet" known as Edgar Cayce. That book was There is a River. After devouring it in 2 days I was off to the library to research...I had to know more about this idea and about Edgar Cayce himself. That started me on a radically different spiritual journey than the one I had been on growing up, and there was no going back, ever.

You see, I had experienced other worldly creatures all my life, so I was open to the idea that someone could reach them. And the idea just resonated with me that we live on somehow, and not in some heaven or hell paradigm. But I wanted proof, so I had to reasearch, a journey that has taken me many years and is not over.

There is A River

This is the fascinating story of Edgar Cayce's life and the knowledge he shared in his deep trances.

Another Reincarnation Experience

Reincarnation

In my readings, and in my networking, I had come across many references to "Past life regression hypnosis" as a method to remember prior life experiences. One of my dear and trusted friends suggested we try it together and I guess the strength of knowing I had a friend there convinced me it would be okay, so I began classes with her, 4 unforgettable weeks in 1984.

Each week the instructor would slightly darken the room, play soft music, and begin with a prayer and low chanting, asking for clear energy to allow us access to the universal akashic records. Then she would count backwards from 10 to 1 and by then we would be in a trance. It was quite unlike anything I remember before or since (and no, I was not under the influence of any kind of mind altering substances !) I was awake and aware enough to realize I was in that room and that there were others there, and yet I was transported in my mind to some other place, some time long ago, and the names of the people in my dream state were very consistant with the time period I found myself in. Moreover, I recognized some of them as identical spirits to people I know in this life!

It was quite unsettling actually, not the events in the other place, just the idea that I felt I had been somewhere else and that I had actually lived in that place. It was too strong in experience and memory to be made up, and not anything I would have imagined, nor wanted! And yet, I remember that whole dream trance experience as well as any other experience I've had in this lifetime. It might as well have happened yesterday as it is still very clear in my memory.

After a time, the instructor would count backwards and bring us back to this time and place and if we wanted to share we could. I did not share my experience, but several others also said they had gone someplace else and experienced themselves as someone else.

We had 2 more weekly sessions and each time I went somewhere else and was someone else. In 2 of those lifetimes I experienced myself as a man. And no, I was not Nefertiti or some queen or anyone you would have ever heard of, just normal people mostly. But the most interesting session by far was the last one of the series.

Evidence of Reincarnation

The Experience of Death

Reincarnation

For our last class, our instructor announced we would be trying for a death experience. Her intention was to help us experience this so that we would not fear it any more. She cautioned us that not everyone would achieve this and not to worry if we did not, just go with the flow of the quiet group energy and meditate.
So she did her usual countdown and I found myself as a 14th or 15th century monk (not sure ) when she did some other guided imagery and I was next lying on a table in the infirmary with a bunch of other monks praying over me. I was very old and close to death but not in pain. They closed their eyes in a group prayer and I began to float to the top of the room...completely free of my body, my spirit was free. I knew that I had just left my body for good, a physical death.

As I reached the ceiling I could see myself lying there with my eyes closed and the faces of the other monks. Turning towards the sky, I floated through the ceiling with ease and continued to gain momentum as I flew towards the edge of our atmosphere. There at the edge I turned around to gaze at what I was leaving behind and then blasted into the galaxy free at last from this world's constraints.

I flew with complete abandon around countless beautiful stars, and no body was around me, just my spirit itself doing somersaults and vaulting over beams of light and swirls of stardust in a joyous flying dance with trails of light flowing out behind me in shimmering colors...I had a feeling of pure unadulterated freedom and nothing else. It seemed like eons of time and I was no longer in that room. I was gone and not returning. But at some point out there in that flying star field of galaxies I began to feel the urge to slow down a little...and still years passed.

Until one day I felt a voice inside my being say "It's time to go back." I was not really ready but the urge kept feeling stronger until a day came when I stopped still in the universe and started floating downward towards earth, back and forth slowly like a feather floating down, down, down forever, down to the edge of the earth's atmosphere, down through clouds of rain and blue skies and sunlight, down through fog till I rested inside my Mother's body. At that point I heard my instructor counting down to bring us back to this reality, and so I woke up, never to be the same again.

As she always did, our instructor asked us if anyone had any experiences we wanted to share. A couple of people said they had a death experience and went on to share the experience I had always heard: seeing a light at the end of a tunnel, etc. Since I thought theirs sounded more like what I had read and mine was nothing like that, I thought mine was just a dream and could not possibly be a real experience. We were about to leave when the teacher asked me to talk about mine. I still did not think mine was real and told her so. But her eyes lit up when I began to tell my story. She said that after listening to thousands of death experiences, mine was a very common one. Wow. She was sure it was real and was happy to have another experience to recount for her book she was writing. But for me it offered profound relief!

For one, I was no longer afraid of death. Fly around in the universe? Sign me up when it's time! For another, I found the answer to that lifelong question. I am sure that I have reincarnated...and that my spirit stays alive after life ends here.

Yes, I think we do live on and reincarnate.

enlightened_soul says:

I, myself, truly believe that reincarnation exists in our world, but I see how there are skeptics, because I feel that it is difficult to connect to our previous lives. I truly hope, and 100% believe, that reincarnation exists, and I am excited to experience life through a multitude of eyes, and hope one day that I, too, will be able to have the opportunity to get a glimpse of my previous lives. Reincarnation is a truly fascinating and I hope you all get to experience it in one way or another. ^_^

says:

Absolutely. Primarily I believe in reincarnation as a result of the experiences of one of my young grandchildren. I've written a lens on the subject as well.

A-Redneck says:

I believe in reincarnation

Zut_Moon says:

Absolutely !!! In fact, I remember most of my past lives ... from a hungry beggar in Ancient Egypt to being Queen Victoria.

Most of my lives I've been a good guy and thence rewarded to being Zut Moon in this life.

AlleyCatLane says:

I became fascinated with reincarnation about 1986 and started reading everything I could find. I totally believe in it. The stories of young children who have never been out of their villages but talk about living in other towns, being married, describing their homes, etc. and then people verifying what they have said is what really convinces me.

fred says:

I didn't believe this before, but I think this is real, religion is just human invention, there is a supreme being there that has nothing to do with earthly religion.

Rob says:

Ive felt all my life wed been here before ,I always came back to this reasoning when a baby or child would die ,and always felt what purpose it is to die so young ,early biblical teachings, and other ancient religions and philosophies also enlightened me that yes ,..we are reincarnated souls ,yes weve been on the physical material plane for maybe millions of years ,...

Nell Rose says:

Hi, this was a fascinating journey that you had. I also got interested after reading Edgar Cayce the Sleeping Prophet. I have always wanted to try regression, as a few years ago I had a dream about living in the 17th Century, I remember floating towards an old womans body looking out of a window, when I arrived inside her body I was still me, but also her. I believe my name was Margaret. I remember looking down into the street and seeing Roundheads and Cavaliers rushing towards each other on their horses. By my side, there was a small blond boy, in old fashioned clothing, the funny thing was that this was before I had my son. When he was born and especially when he was about 2 or 3 years old, he had blond curly hair! just like the boy in my dream. Your story of regression and floating up into Space was amazing, it just goes to show that not everybody has the same experience and yet, as you said, it turned out that you thought your experience was completely different but actually others had experienced it too. Amazing, really enjoyed reading this, thanks nell rose

poddys says:

I'm not sure. There is a lot of evidence that people remember events and things from previous lives, but is it really that they are reincarnated, or some memories implanted in their brain like a dream. I really don't know. I would like to believe that it does exist.

Quentin says:

I think it is when you die and you are born in another bodie

OceanFaerieGoddess says:

Yes I absolutely do (and I never did originally). I believe there is an afterlife, a Heaven, if you like, but I believe that we can incarnate here on Earth to have different experiences, until eventually we can "return to Source" when we are ready. Great topic for debate, Heather!

T says:

The idea of reincarnation is fascinating. I've always heard that when someone dies a baby is born. This leads me to believe that reincarnation is possible. That and the fact that Professor Stephen Hawkins has discovered that the universe didn't need a creator. That time didn't exist, nothing existed, before the big bang. I was on a vacation years ago and went to an old west town in South Dakota. There was a hotel there, not in use but originally built when the town was first discovered. When I went into the hotel I had this feeling come over me like I had been there before, even though I knew in this life I haven't. I was 10 at the time and ever since I have wondered about reincarnation.

jay says:

well it kinda hard to know if it's a real thing ,well out hard core proof .That is me my slef i would hope and whish it real see i grow up in a souther Christian home see down their they like to scare you in to haven ha ha.. But as for reincarnation if you all have hard core proof i would love to hear it email me at mikemoor33@yahoo.com

Lianne says:

What would the World be without reincarnation? Although I like the idea of being reincarnated into a human again, not into a goat or bird or anything. I also believe in god. Maybe he is the one who chooses who we will reincarnate into. I believe in souls too. That's how we have feelings.

hysongdesigns says:

Absolutely. We are eternal beings. We will never die, but live always. Sometimes we are in a physical bodies and sometimes we are not, but we are always alive and always a part of the godforce, the universe, creator of all that is.

Jewelsofawe says:

I totally believe we come back. I read Edgar Cayce books too. I also do future life progression so I have seen my next life. I don't think going much further than that is worth it because each life influences the next. Love my next one though! This one not so much, but it was not meant to be wonderful in the material sense, though in the spiritual sense: leaps and bounds, so it is all good. Love, love, love your lens!

Nina-symone says:

i belive that there are reincarnations an you dont get to pick who or what you want to be...thats decided by your actions in this life. thats what i belive. : )

karmicchristian says:

I would say that the soul transmigrates through many lifetimes. The bible also speaks about it.

Heather426 says:

You three have made excellent points and observations. It's so interesting to read others' thoughts about this:)

Serenia says:

YES. I actually so think our souls live more than one life. I have an idea that I used to live in France (specifically the Languedoc during the albigensian crusade). I have had this feeling and this fascination with France since I was a little girl. Other than this feeling, I have no proof. I am reluctant to undergo hypnosis.

VickiVic says:

Yes. Moleclules are in everything, even the empty space around us this very second. Stars stop shining once they explode or implode, and their energy simply disperses amongst the cosmos. This makes me think we as in the human race, have a similar effect. I like to think we are made of the same stuff as stars. I think we live a lot of lives in just one. I think we are made up of everyone we encounter. But I don't think anything about this subject is simple, and yes or no are not good answers to choose from, there should be no restrictions on such a mysterious unexplainable thing we call life. Just be happy..and be nice to the people and trees. OH and tables and TVs and toilet paper....

Loe says:

I think its so unfair to be born into this world against our will, and then to have a deity damn us upon entry into it; unless we embrace a precise dogma, we will be eternally damned? If reincarnation is the other option, Im for that option altogether!

Heather426 says:

In reply, I have not thought of it your way, but you make an excellent point!

Cumberland says:

I believe in reincarnation. It's the best explanation as to how people could get so screwed up. It has to take more practice than that available in one life to achieve the heights of idiocy and cruelty some seem to exhibit.

awakeningwellness says:

I have seen many of my past lives and deaths so I know that reincarnation is real. And like you Heather I remember how wonderful it feels to be free of this heavy painful body and floating free as the wind!

clouda9 says:

I have not experienced anything like what you wrote about Heather, although in my heart, my mind I do believe reincarnation is real. What makes me believe it the most are after-death experiences (especially when my grandma passed away), as well as "I know that person" scenarios that I've encountered throughout my life - right now.

nhet says:

maybe fact or fiction it depends on people if how they approach it..

Raj says:

Yeah

mukunda22 says:

I was raised to believe in reincarnation--now I hink we live simultaneous lives!!

JaguarJulie says:

OMG, you better believe it ... and I will be BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Othercat says:

I grew up with memories of things that happened before I was born. It's not like I woke up one day and started remembering things. The memories were always there. I just didn't understand what they were until I was older.

bhavya says:

i definitely think it exists and this is a wonderful post abou reincarnation. i am always interested in reincarnation and i would love to learn what my past life was. and thats the coolest thing i have ever heard. i wish i could experience wha you expirienced

CrypticFragments says:

I had always felt reincarnation might be possible but after a recent experience I am CONVINCED. I do not have specific past life memories, but I know "what" I was and a general "where" geographically...and I have met a few people I knew in some form in that past life

skiesgreen says:

I have full memory of it, my last death, between lives, visions between lives and coming into this life one month before my birth.

says:

Definitely. I've met strangers & we've mutually "remembered" our past life associations together and details. Cool, huh?

No way, this is it. We only get one shot!

jake says:

life is life death is death science is science and religion is bullshit the end

chris kasten says:

This sounds very interesting. But I do believe we remain on earth as a ghost.

phoenix-arizona-friends says:

Some may say yes, I have no memories otherwise.

Tipi says:

I wish there was another choice, I just don't know!

Helenee says:

I believe we only have one shot here. I also believe that souls exist.-- Let's try another take on reincarnation: What if this feeling of being met with "identical spirits" during your sessions comes from you drawing or getting drawn by spirits similar to yours and to your own situation / circumstances??

Con says:

I don't believe in reincarnation. I don't even believe souls exist. The body operates more like a machine rather than a vessel that holds magic energy. We, by instinct try to stay alive and maintain homeostasis. Once the body is dead, it's like a machine, it's gone and is forgotten about. Our brains are hardwired to stay alive as long as we can. Through science, we can preserve ourselves, not by magic. Science is the key to everything.

Li-Li-ThePinkBookworm says:

Nice idea to take on such a controversial topic, but I have to sat nay. We have one life to live, one life to use for good. If we had multiples, then we would never be able to find such fulfilling life in Christ, and would forever just go from one life to another, with only our worldly lives to look forward to instead of Heaven.

hlkljgk says:

i believe in physics - energy can neither be created nor destroyed. so, my energy will remain, albeit in different forms.

reviewpro says:

I am 99% sure that reincarnation can't happen.

jptanabe says:

I don't believe in reincarnation but I do believe in an afterlife where our eternal spirit "lives." I also believe that a person's spirit can influence and communicate with those still in their physical bodies. Each person is a unique child of God, each with our own life course. If we were reincarnations of people who lived in the past it would get pretty confusing - I can believe my great great grandmother influences my life, but I don't think I am her. I think we get our chance on the earth, so we better do our best here!

lilkon says:

Growing up, I believed that man had a spirit within that could not be wasted at death. At 80, I find I gave too much credit to human beings in general. If
Darwin was correct, then much more time must pass before we evolve into a truly remarkable creature. "Dust to Dust"

Tipi says:

I believe we are given one time to die, and if we are those that are redeemed...we will then become angel-like and even equal to angels, as the scriptures teach. If we are not that blessed, well I am very sorry for those souls.

Its an interesting topic, but no evidence that reincarnation exists. Penn and Teller said that it BS, and I would have to come along side them.

I believe a lot of people are trying to sale their books, and maybe they can convince those who will fall for anything, because they don't stand for what is true.

jptanabe says:

Great topic! I believe in life after death, that we have an eternal spirit, and that spirit can interact with people who still have their physical bodies. But no, we don't reincarnate and have another whole life on earth. That would be tedious as well as confusing! I want to move on to the new eternal realm after my body dies, and hopefully I'll be worthy of a good place there.

says:

No such thing as reincarnation it is a figment of our imagination along with many other thing in life. I believe we live and die and what happens after is anyone's guess. It is not what we were taught in Sunday school and it is not what all the religions of the world would like us to believe. I'll continue to be agnostic.

d-artist says:

I also as a Christian believe we have one life and one soul...but I did not always believe this way, as I had some experiences and had a "Pick and Choose" belief...however I now choose to believe what the Bible says. I don't judge anyone for what they might choose to believe, God is the judge.

Jimdenison says:

Nope!

ezekielbread says:

Whether reincarnation is real or not, I would rather that it was not for purely selfish reasons. If reincarnation exists, then that means we had a life before the one we are currently living but we don't remember it. So just thinking about forgetting all about the wonderful people in my life that I love so dearly breaks my heart.

mbgphoto says:

Very interesting lens and interesting ideas...but I too have to stay true to my Christian beliefs. I believe have one life and one soul and I believe in the afterlife and that we are saved through Christ by God's Amazing grace.

Momtothezoo says:

I have to agree with Sylvestermouse. As a Christian who believes the teachings of the Bible, I believe in one soul and one life. I believe in eternal life following a life's walk with God which He has promised each of us who believe in Him. We only need "one shot" if we follow His leadership.

MyrnaM says:

I believe in the resurrection of the body, and therefore knowing the soul can not enter into more than one body, I reject reincarnation. To me it is an easy way out, and with all due to respect of others; it is an excuse that maybe you will be given a second chance. Fat chance!

John says:

No No No, not that. Potty training all over again...Aggggg

sncalo says:

Although I do not believe in reincarnation, I believe that there is something else after death.

sncalo says:

Although I do not believe in reincarnation, I believe there is something else after death.

Wesley_Paul says:

I have read many "proofs" of reincarnation, but none to my satisfaction. THere are holes in them. I would like to tell you of them, but I cannot write too much since I have a problem with my eye. COntact me some other way.

eccles1 says:

Earth is only a place we stay only for a short time we are here to learn to evolve and than we keep going even after our body drops and we go to another dimension of ife but not physical.. it's more like a true never ending journey where we get better and better evolving until we become one with God we are already one with God but our mind is the problem but do we keep coming back here on earth until we get it ? I don't know but I hope not !

Chip_Westley says:

I really wish there was an undecided column here, ha!

I'd have to say that it is unknowable to us whether we will become re-incarnated or experience an after life. Many of us hold beliefs but ultimately we can only surmise as to what lies beyond. Great question though. :)

Sylvestermouse says:

Wow! I hate to be the only one on this side of the board but I would be denying my beliefs if I did not choose this side. "To thine own self be true" so here goes: I believe we definitely have a connection, in some cases even a spiritual connection, to our ancestors, but I do not believe we are or ever were our ancestors. I completely agree that we can see events past and present through other's eyes, I just don't believe they were ever our eyes. I believe we are given one life, one spirit, one soul and I am doing everything I can to make sure I do it right, now. I hope I didn't offend anyone on the other side of the board. I respect all of you and I trust that each of your encounters were real.
