Is Reincarnation Real?

How I Came to Believe in Reincarnation
In the early days of the Christian Church reincarnation was still a widely held concept, and was only removed later in one of the Pope's declarations. Many other religions hold the idea as a central tenant. What do you think? Where do you stand? Yes or No? Fact or Fiction? Undecided?
I think the spirit lives on and that sometimes the spirit takes on new forms. Even quantum physics supports this! So it is my belief. Read on for why, and to express your opinion. Please be civil...you wouldn't want any bad karma, would you?

My First Encounter with the Idea of Reincarnation
There is a River by Thomas Sugrue
A weathered paperback that fell off my friend's bed introduced me to the "sleeping prophet" known as Edgar Cayce. That book was There is a River. After devouring it in 2 days I was off to the library to research...I had to know more about this idea and about Edgar Cayce himself. That started me on a radically different spiritual journey than the one I had been on growing up, and there was no going back, ever. You see, I had experienced other worldly creatures all my life, so I was open to the idea that someone could reach them. And the idea just resonated with me that we live on somehow, and not in some heaven or hell paradigm. But I wanted proof, so I had to reasearch, a journey that has taken me many years and is not over.

Another Reincarnation Experience
Reincarnation
In my readings, and in my networking, I had come across many references to "Past life regression hypnosis" as a method to remember prior life experiences. One of my dear and trusted friends suggested we try it together and I guess the strength of knowing I had a friend there convinced me it would be okay, so I began classes with her, 4 unforgettable weeks in 1984.Each week the instructor would slightly darken the room, play soft music, and begin with a prayer and low chanting, asking for clear energy to allow us access to the universal akashic records. Then she would count backwards from 10 to 1 and by then we would be in a trance. It was quite unlike anything I remember before or since (and no, I was not under the influence of any kind of mind altering substances !) I was awake and aware enough to realize I was in that room and that there were others there, and yet I was transported in my mind to some other place, some time long ago, and the names of the people in my dream state were very consistant with the time period I found myself in. Moreover, I recognized some of them as identical spirits to people I know in this life!
It was quite unsettling actually, not the events in the other place, just the idea that I felt I had been somewhere else and that I had actually lived in that place. It was too strong in experience and memory to be made up, and not anything I would have imagined, nor wanted! And yet, I remember that whole dream trance experience as well as any other experience I've had in this lifetime. It might as well have happened yesterday as it is still very clear in my memory.
After a time, the instructor would count backwards and bring us back to this time and place and if we wanted to share we could. I did not share my experience, but several others also said they had gone someplace else and experienced themselves as someone else.
We had 2 more weekly sessions and each time I went somewhere else and was someone else. In 2 of those lifetimes I experienced myself as a man. And no, I was not Nefertiti or some queen or anyone you would have ever heard of, just normal people mostly. But the most interesting session by far was the last one of the series.

The Experience of Death
Reincarnation
So she did her usual countdown and I found myself as a 14th or 15th century monk (not sure ) when she did some other guided imagery and I was next lying on a table in the infirmary with a bunch of other monks praying over me. I was very old and close to death but not in pain. They closed their eyes in a group prayer and I began to float to the top of the room...completely free of my body, my spirit was free. I knew that I had just left my body for good, a physical death.
As I reached the ceiling I could see myself lying there with my eyes closed and the faces of the other monks. Turning towards the sky, I floated through the ceiling with ease and continued to gain momentum as I flew towards the edge of our atmosphere. There at the edge I turned around to gaze at what I was leaving behind and then blasted into the galaxy free at last from this world's constraints.
I flew with complete abandon around countless beautiful stars, and no body was around me, just my spirit itself doing somersaults and vaulting over beams of light and swirls of stardust in a joyous flying dance with trails of light flowing out behind me in shimmering colors...I had a feeling of pure unadulterated freedom and nothing else. It seemed like eons of time and I was no longer in that room. I was gone and not returning. But at some point out there in that flying star field of galaxies I began to feel the urge to slow down a little...and still years passed.
Until one day I felt a voice inside my being say "It's time to go back." I was not really ready but the urge kept feeling stronger until a day came when I stopped still in the universe and started floating downward towards earth, back and forth slowly like a feather floating down, down, down forever, down to the edge of the earth's atmosphere, down through clouds of rain and blue skies and sunlight, down through fog till I rested inside my Mother's body. At that point I heard my instructor counting down to bring us back to this reality, and so I woke up, never to be the same again.
As she always did, our instructor asked us if anyone had any experiences we wanted to share. A couple of people said they had a death experience and went on to share the experience I had always heard: seeing a light at the end of a tunnel, etc. Since I thought theirs sounded more like what I had read and mine was nothing like that, I thought mine was just a dream and could not possibly be a real experience. We were about to leave when the teacher asked me to talk about mine. I still did not think mine was real and told her so. But her eyes lit up when I began to tell my story. She said that after listening to thousands of death experiences, mine was a very common one. Wow. She was sure it was real and was happy to have another experience to recount for her book she was writing. But for me it offered profound relief!
For one, I was no longer afraid of death. Fly around in the universe? Sign me up when it's time! For another, I found the answer to that lifelong question. I am sure that I have reincarnated...and that my spirit stays alive after life ends here.

Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, I think we do live on and reincarnate.
enlightened_soul says:
I, myself, truly believe that reincarnation exists in our world, but I see how there are skeptics, because I feel that it is difficult to connect to our previous lives. I truly hope, and 100% believe, that reincarnation exists, and I am excited to experience life through a multitude of eyes, and hope one day that I, too, will be able to have the opportunity to get a glimpse of my previous lives. Reincarnation is a truly fascinating and I hope you all get to experience it in one way or another. ^_^

I became fascinated with reincarnation about 1986 and started reading everything I could find. I totally believe in it. The stories of young children who have never been out of their villages but talk about living in other towns, being married, describing their homes, etc. and then people verifying what they have said is what really convinces me.

Hi, this was a fascinating journey that you had. I also got interested after reading Edgar Cayce the Sleeping Prophet. I have always wanted to try regression, as a few years ago I had a dream about living in the 17th Century, I remember floating towards an old womans body looking out of a window, when I arrived inside her body I was still me, but also her. I believe my name was Margaret. I remember looking down into the street and seeing Roundheads and Cavaliers rushing towards each other on their horses. By my side, there was a small blond boy, in old fashioned clothing, the funny thing was that this was before I had my son. When he was born and especially when he was about 2 or 3 years old, he had blond curly hair! just like the boy in my dream. Your story of regression and floating up into Space was amazing, it just goes to show that not everybody has the same experience and yet, as you said, it turned out that you thought your experience was completely different but actually others had experienced it too. Amazing, really enjoyed reading this, thanks nell rose

I'm not sure. There is a lot of evidence that people remember events and things from previous lives, but is it really that they are reincarnated, or some memories implanted in their brain like a dream. I really don't know. I would like to believe that it does exist.

The idea of reincarnation is fascinating. I've always heard that when someone dies a baby is born. This leads me to believe that reincarnation is possible. That and the fact that Professor Stephen Hawkins has discovered that the universe didn't need a creator. That time didn't exist, nothing existed, before the big bang. I was on a vacation years ago and went to an old west town in South Dakota. There was a hotel there, not in use but originally built when the town was first discovered. When I went into the hotel I had this feeling come over me like I had been there before, even though I knew in this life I haven't. I was 10 at the time and ever since I have wondered about reincarnation.

I totally believe we come back. I read Edgar Cayce books too. I also do future life progression so I have seen my next life. I don't think going much further than that is worth it because each life influences the next. Love my next one though! YES. I actually so think our souls live more than one life. I have an idea that I used to live in France (specifically the Languedoc during the albigensian crusade). Yes. Moleclules are in everything, even the empty space around us this very second. Stars stop shining once they explode or implode, and their energy simply disperses amongst the cosmos. This makes me think we as in the human race, have a similar effect. I like to think we are made of the same stuff as stars. I think we live a lot of lives in just one. I think we are made up of everyone we encounter. But I don't think anything about this subject is simple, and yes or no are not good answers to choose from, there should be no restrictions on such a mysterious unexplainable thing we call life. Just be happy..and be nice to the people and trees. OH and tables and TVs and toilet paper....

I don't believe in reincarnation. I don't even believe souls exist. The body operates more like a machine rather than a vessel that holds magic energy. We, by instinct try to stay alive and maintain homeostasis. Once the body is dead, it's like a machine, it's gone and is forgotten about. Our brains are hardwired to stay alive as long as we can. Through science, we can preserve ourselves, not by magic. Science is the key to everything.

Nice idea to take on such a controversial topic, but I have to sat nay. We have one life to live, one life to use for good. If we had multiples, then we would never be able to find such fulfilling life in Christ, and would forever just go from one life to another, with only our worldly lives to look forward to instead of Heaven.

I don't believe in reincarnation but I do believe in an afterlife where our eternal spirit "lives." I also believe that a person's spirit can influence and communicate with those still in their physical bodies. Each person is a unique child of God, each with our own life course. If we were reincarnations of people who lived in the past it would get pretty confusing - I can believe my great great grandmother influences my life, but I don't think I am her. I think we get our chance on the earth, so we better do our best here!

I believe we are given one time to die, and if we are those that are redeemed...we will then become angel-like and even equal to angels, as the scriptures teach. If we are not that blessed, well I am very sorry for those souls.
Its an interesting topic, but no evidence that reincarnation exists. Penn and Teller said that it BS, and I would have to come along side them.
I believe a lot of people are trying to sale their books, and maybe they can convince those who will fall for anything, because they don't stand for what is true.

Great topic! I believe in life after death, that we have an eternal spirit, and that spirit can interact with people who still have their physical bodies. But no, we don't reincarnate and have another whole life on earth. That would be tedious as well as confusing! I want to move on to the new eternal realm after my body dies, and hopefully I'll be worthy of a good place there.

"To thine own self be true" so here goes: I believe we definitely have a connection, in some cases even a spiritual connection, to our ancestors, but I do not believe we are or ever were our ancestors. I completely agree that we can see events past and present through other's eyes, I just don't believe they were ever our eyes. I believe we are given one life, one spirit, one soul and I am doing everything I can to make sure I do it right, now. I hope I didn't offend anyone on the other side of the board. I respect all of you and I trust that each of your encounters were real.

- This is indeed an interesting debate. There are some amazing accounts of people who can recall things from the past, but so often the stories can't be confirmed through historical knowledge. With others the memories involve famous characters from history. I would like to believe that it's real. Excellent discussion, blessings left behind.

- I left a big comment above so I won't repeat it all again here. I will say again that I do love this lens! Awesome! Had to bless it! I am a big believer in reincarnation and I regress and progress myself and others. Mostly just me lately though.

- In the words of the Preacher, ‘there is no remembrance of former things; neither shall there be any remembrance of things that are to come with those that shall come after’*. The Preacher - believed to be the King Solomon, was supposedly the wisest and there can be no questioning his short-term or long-term memory on forgetting former times.
(*Ecclesiastes 1:11) - Lines borrowed from my book.
People are mere avatars inc. you and me - all the souls will ultimately realize the truth. :)
Have a nice Easter weekend.

- Yes, but you are relying on a translated document which could have multiple meanings and has been interpreted my men, not God. There is no evidence that Solomon would know ultimate truth, as only God does.

- I read an article recently (in the last 2 or 3 years that really spoke to me) and it said that souls reincarnate to learn different lessons each time. As an example, perhaps the lesson (for example) might be dealing with medical illnesses. That clinched things for me - the idea of reincarnation.
I personally have had nothing but medical problems in my life, from the day I was born until last year (when I was 45 years old) when a new medical problem was discovered - and I am dreading finding more new problems as I get older. I am not a hypochondriac. I dont want to be sick and ill.
I ask myself now - WHAT lessons could I possibly learn from this life?? I hate this life. I hate being ill. Is that what I will learn from this life?
If I lived any other lives, other than being in France during the 11th century, I am not aware of them. I am only aware so far, that I am sure I lived in france during the albigensian crusade and that I was a cathar. It kind of also explains why I never accepted the Baptist religion I was raised with. I always had trouble accepting it and fought my parents so hard to leave. I quit the church as soon as they gave me permission to quit when I was 19 years old. It was the best decision I ever made for myself and I dont regret making it for an instant. If it stems from once being a cathar then I say I am all for reincarnation!!!
If you know who first wrote this article about lessons learned in each lifetime, could you let me know, using the contact button on my profile page? Thanks.

- Perhaps it is true what you said about the Pope banning the concept of reincarnation in the Western Roman Catholic Church, which was influenced by ancient Roman religion, Mithraism (a syncretic religion based on Persian / Zoroastrian beliefs), and also the beliefs of western and northern tribes participating in the enlarged Empire. On the other hand, Eastern Greek Orthodox Church, which was the first to receive the Gospel (and in whose language the Gospels were written in the first place), never accepted reincarnation as a christian concept

- 'There is a River', by Thomas Sugrue was my intro to a new spirituality. It was in 1970--I was 33 and like you I traveled a whole new path to beliefs. Also like you, my quest is still not over. As a matter of fact, I a few minutes ago I wrote a blog about "If I believed in reincarnation" Don't know if I can post it here but it's http://mbradleymccauley.blogspot.com/2011/02/if-i-believed-in-reincarnation.html
How synchhronistic is it that I just wrote that blog and found this lens? Probably not synchronistic at all, reincarnation was on my mind.
Great lens. So glad I found you.

- Having been brought up and lived all my life in a society that holds the idea of reincarnation as one of its basic tenets, it isn't a new or alien idea. But there are certain questions about it (as well as about ideas that are contrary to it) that remain unanswered from a logical perspective, and perhaps will always remain so. Interesting lens.

- Great lens on a very interesting subject, 5*****. I don't know what to believe, not being religious, but there are many cases of regression and people recalling previous lives. Whether this is just vibrations living on or actual reincarnation I don't know. I wonder if science will ever figure this out.

- I didn't take part in the debate...i don't need to, i know 150% that reincarnation occurs and it isn't something which i would want to debate over because it has to be experienced to be totally believed so debating with a non-believer seems rather pointless as i cannot give them that needed "experience"...i only debate when i know that i can win and prove my side is the right one to beon .

- Incredible lens on Reincarnation! I'm a believer and have always had a strong sense of knowing I've been here before. Haven't done the regression but I think I might like to.
