Creating a Bridge for Your Enterprise - To the 21st Century

It's a new frontier for businesses that will enjoy success in the 21st century, and Jack Bergstrand has captured the essence of how to succeed in his new book, Reinvent Your Enterprise - Through Better Knowledge Work. From the insights of Peter F. Drucker, legendary management thinker and founder of the distinguished Drucker Institute, Bergstrand has found a way to strategize our thinking to meet with the problems we face today.

Just as fashions change with the seasons, so businesses transform themselves with new technology and the changing economic times. One of the biggest transformations that came about through Drucker is that companies no longer treat employees as a liability - something that costs. Now, companies treat their employees like the assets they are, and reward them for jobs well done.

Bergstrand's contribution to Drucker's remarkable insight is to present a plan on how to climb to the next rung in the success ladder.

In Reinvent Your Enterprise, Bergstrand explains how the willingness of a business to be open to the following suggestions will help it succeed:

  • Reconstruct the experience.
  • Know the link between reinvention, productivity and prosperity.
  • Create a better system for knowledge work productivity.
  • Reinvent yourself, both corporately and societal.

Reinvent Your Enterprise is a step-by-step guide that includes how to stop meaningless actions in your enterprise such as beginning, but never finishing projects and numerous meetings that have no point. This book will change your way of thinking about where and how to make your enterprise a successful one - building a bridge to the 21st century.

About Jack Bergstrand

Jack Bergstrand is an authority on enterprise reinvention and knowledge work productivity. He successfully used the principles involved in this business solution when he founded Brand Velocity, Inc. He also developed the highly successful Strategic Profiling instrument, used to light a fire under enterprise projects. His breakthrough book, Reinvent Your Enterprise - Through Better Knowledge Work, was born from a need that Bergstrand noted was plaguing many of today's businesses - the need to keep up with the times.

Bergstrand utilizes his numerous years in business and consulting to create a book designed for our times. Traditional methods of running a business - including motivation techniques and productivity measurement - no longer work in this rapidly changing enterprise climate. Reinvent Your Enterprise helps you gain a valuable perspective for guiding your business into the 21st century.

While Reinvent Your Enterprise is a "must read" for management, everyone who is part of an organization will see golden opportunities revealed and how to make the most of what our new (and sometimes confusing society) throws at us. Through Bergstrand's philosophy of "envision, design, build and operate, you'll gain insights into what successful businesses need to know as they make the transition into the 21st century.

Jack Bergstrand's present occupation is the Chief Executive Officer for his company, Brand Velocity, Inc. He was previously employed as Chief Information Officer for The Coca-Cola Company. His first book, Reinvent Your Enterprise, will become a well-read, dog-eared book that you'll reach for time after time as you propel yourself and your business to new heights of success.

Thanks for dropping by my lens Jack. I'll make your book recommended reading for our strategy students. The systemic links from envision through design build and operate are essential. So often they are seen and understood as discrete steps in which people only play a small part. I was fortunate to see this process at work in a fast cycle games design environment for 15 years. I only saw 'the pattern' because of the speed of the process (white board to on sale product) and thought how analogous this was to the genetisist and the fruit fly. Lensrolled and stumbled too.

Well, at the moment I AM indeed reading Reality Check by Guy Kawasaki -- that's quite an involved book, using all my mental reserves you know. Honestly, I had not yet heard of "Reinvent Your Enterprise," but it does sound like a compelling read and the cover design captures my curiousity too. Thank you!

ENVISION - Step One of the Knowledge Work Productivity System

by Jack Bergstrand

With knowledge work productivity and Enterprise reinvention, if you don't know where you are going, any road will get you there. If you do know, great things are possible. The Envision step is important to establish your destination. It is the starting point to help you clearly articulate your intent and purpose so that your destination can be productively achieved.

Envision asks and answers the key question: Where do we intend to go and Why?

This needs to integrate important external factors including: who is our customer? What challenges are they facing? How can we help them lower their costs and be more successful? It clarifies what your business is and what it should be.

To be most productive, the Envision work-behavior area must keep the Enterprise at least one step ahead of the problems that the organization faces-always focusing on becoming better.

When there is not a clear Enterprise vision, a number of dysfunctions will develop. They include people working hard without making much progress, difficulties that result from inconsistent and incompatible goals within and across functions, duplication of effort, and critical projects that never get started or do get started but are delayed or never finished.
One way to visualize the Envision-Design-Build-Operate work-behav¬ior areas in the knowledge work productivity system is to relate them to a map of the United States. Following the cybernetic process, it's like hav¬ing a brainstorming session in Seattle (Envision), crunching numbers in Boston (Design), developing infrastructure in Miami (Build), and cultivat¬ing relationships in Los Angeles (Operate). Using this metaphor, Seattle (Envision) is the first leg of the journey.

The Envision step-focused on Where your Enterprise intends to go and Why-is vital for adaptation. It is needed to help you and your com¬pany visualize, in a changing environment, a future that is different from the present and the past. It is also required to make strategic tradeoffs at the Enterprise level. Productive visions, made possible by excellent sub¬jective knowledge orientations, help Enterprises transcend their historic practices and organizational boundaries with greater effectiveness and ef¬ficiency. They are the necessary catalyst to help individuals, functions, and organizations reach new destinations in a changing world.

Productive visions are positive and also push people out of their com¬fort zones. This requires establishing a clear tension between the present and the future-simultaneously ensuring constancy of purpose and instill¬ing a fear of the status quo that is greater than the fear of the unknown. Productive visions need to connect the dots between Where the Enterprise has been, Where it is, Where it needs to go, and Why.

It's important that Envision, as the first step of the knowledge work productivity system, be connected to the Design, Build, and Operate work-behavior areas, be productive, and be sustainable. Entrepreneurs such as Sam Walton of Walmart and Ray Kroc of McDonald's were very successful at doing this. They were masters at integrating their vision, plan, structure, and people and then scaling the entire system over time.

A productive vision is not the same as a good idea. It requires that the idea be made operational by testing, scaling, and continually improving it in the marketplace. It separates the creative dreamers from the successful implementers. For Enterprises to develop and properly manage productive visions through the Envision step, several areas are important to understand and synthesize:

* Ensuring that your vision clarifies Where you intend to go and Why
* Using your vision to accelerate Enterprise tradeoffs
* Accelerating tradeoffs to improve your customer value and innovation
* Using customer value and innovation to focus your Enterprise strategy
