What Do You Know About Surrealism?
This lens is about the Surrealism Movement and Surrealist Art.
What is Relâche?

The approval of the public must be avoided above all. The public must be forbidden to enter if confusion is to be avoided.
-- Andre BretonThe word "relâche" is French and means "no performance tonight." It was often found on signs put outside a theater on the night the stage was to be dark. It was used by the Surrealists in 1924 as a title for a performance.
I heard the word in a class on Surrealism when I was in graduate school and liked it bacause it was almost spelled like "Rachel."
I have heard and read the pronounciation of "relache" as "ray-losh" (rhymes with splosh) and "ruh-lash." In modern translation it is sometimes listed as an adjective meaning "to slack off."

- Surrealism as we know it today is closely related to some forms of abstract art. In fact, they shared similar origins, but they diverged on their interpretation of what those origins meant to the aesthetic of art.

- Surrealism began primarily as a literary movement based on radical ideas gaining momentum in the 1920s. Naturally, where words flow, images swim congruently, and it is perhaps for the many paintings and 'graphic works' associated with the movement that Surrealism has received much of its notoriety.

- Surrealism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
- Surrealism is an artistic, cultural and intellectual movement oriented toward the liberation of the mind by emphasizing the critical and imaginative faculties of the "unconscious mind" and the attainment of a dream-like state different from, "more than", and ultimately "truer" than everyday reality: the "sur-real", or "more than real".

He came to the conclusion that two very distinct trends of surrealism had developed. One could be qualified as Automatism, and the other as Veristic Surrealism.
SEE THE UNDERWATER MAN!
I shot this video at the St Stupid's Parade in San Francisco. I'd seen this guy walking around with his head in a container of water, up over his eyes, wearing a mask and breathing out a snorkel that went out the top of the container. Definitely surreal.

Dali's Optical Illusions
As the writers explain in this collection, Dali's experiments with perspectives were all-encompassing. The catalog examines his study of conventional forms of perspective in Dutch and Italian art, as well as his play with anamorphosisthe perspectival distortion that produces on the canvas elongated forms demanding an oblique viewpoint--such as in The Enigma of William Tell.

The Quay Brothers
The Brothers Quay Collection: Ten Astonishing Short Films 1984-1993
The surreal visions of the Brothers Quay, identical-twin animators from Minnesota who have since made London their home, are an offbeat mix of clockwork mechanics, wire, thread, and 19th-century curios, all set to life in a series of beautiful but elusive set pieces. Directed in a highly stylized manner, with a shallow plane of focus that intentionally keeps certain objects blurred and a camera that moves with conspicuous mechanical precision, their works have a dreamlike quality about them.
