Relationship Marketing, according to Wikipedia ("the definitive source for all things!" she said sarcastically), is a form of marketing that evolved from direct response marketing in the 1960s and emerged in the 1980s, in which emphasis is placed on building longer term relationships with customers rather than on individual transactions. It involves understanding the customer's needs as they go through their life cycles. It emphasizes providing a range of products or services to existing customers as they need them.

So this Lens is all about that.

Recently, I have been picking up a lot of books about "relationship marketing".  What I am mostly finding is that these books really are just about database marketing taken a step further in personalizing the advertising to the individuals in the database.  I don't consider that the same as relationship marketing.  In a relationship, you are building a two way communication, a relationship.  Most of the books I have been reading simply don't reflect that but rather talk about how you can use automated systems to calculate formulas of this or that to determine which segment is best to blast a specific target promotion to.

This page is NOT about that.

Other names for relationship marketing include one to one marketing, spiritual marketing, customer relation marketing, lead nurturing.
