I've been playing Magic the Gathering since the tail end of Saga block. My roommates and I inherited an old box of cards, and I was drawn to all the white and green cards, and I built several decks, ready to dominate the combat phase, approaching the game with a chess player's mindset. Until, that is, the players who'd picked up all the black and red cards starting killing all my little weenies with Terrors and Fireballs. Not fair! The game was not what I thought it was. But too late, I was addicted (and I later learned that I could get my 'combat tactics' fix by drafting).I played casually for years and even brought my jank decks to local tournaments, where I would typically get trounced by netdecks like Fires or Psychatog. I've gotten better over the years, to the point where I give as good as I get or better, but I've always held onto the idea that a deck should both be a personal expression and a well-tuned machine -- not a copy of what won last week's Pro Tour. I am a Johny with just a little Timmy in him. If you don't know what that means, just ask ;)
A few years ago, while I was attending college, I tried my hand at selling off some extra cards on ebay. As soon as I realized I could turn a profit by doing so, I knew I'd found a perfect match for me and my OCD... you mean I get to sort tens of thousands of cards by color and alphabetically, then get paid to send them to people and make them happy?! Can do! I still get emails like "thank you so much for the Goliath Spiders, my daughter was so happy to get them!" and it makes me smile and makes all the work worthwhile. I think it's important to remember that for every tournament player with an 'only winning is fun' attitude, there are 5 casual players out there laughing around a dinner table, or kids just starting out, fascinated with the art and flavor text just like we all were when we were first introduced to the game. Those are the players we should encourage, for they mean there will be a future for the game we love so much.
