How to Relieve Back Pain with Yoga - First Determine the Cause
Before you start learning how to relieve back pain with yoga you will need to determine what the cause of your back pain is. If you are experiencing numbness or tingling sensations in your legs and feet or immobilizing pain in your back you want to seek the consultation of a physician to see how serious your damage is. Yoga can still assist in the healing process for severe damage but you will want to make sure you are pursuing the correct practice to suit your needs.
Yoga by nature is a well suited practice for addressing back problems. A study published in the December 2005 issue of Annals of Internal Medicine found that 3 months of a specifically designed yoga practice gave significant relief to subjects suffering from chronic back pain and is more effective than traditional exercise for relieving back pain.

To understand just how to relieve back pain using yoga you probably want to know what Yoga is all about. Yoga originated in ancient India and means "union", traditionally yoga was done to bring union to mind, body and spirit. There are eight limbs of yoga we will focus on Asanas or physical poses.Yoga is only for the flexible right? Wrong, anyone can start a yoga practice, even if you don't feel like you are very flexible or very strong. Everyone who starts yoga is not flexible that is something that develops as the muscles strengthen and stretch. Just like with weight lifting when you start you don't have the strength, it is developed. To accomplish this balance you will perform a series of poses each of which has it's own benefit. Yoga is not competitive which allows you to develop your own unique "practice" that benefits your needs.
For back pain yoga is perfect because it is gentle but very effective in providing strength to the muscles that are causing the pain. Back pain is usually caused from an imbalance in your body namely your spine, yoga brings that balance back relieving the pain.

- I know they suggested this for my back pain during pregnancy, but it did not help. I used maternity body pillow and it worked like a charm.

- Yes I also love the warrior poses. Extended child's pose is also very helpful to loosen the lower back especially after having to sit for long periods of time. Thank you for your input!

- I don't know why but warrior and triangle poses have always helped me with lower back pain. Something a lot of the "traditional" exercises for backs couldn't do.
