Religion, Science and Spirituality Debates 2011, 2012

Online debates about essential questions

I love religion. I love spirituality and I especially love discussing it. From any angle. Below you will find links to the debates I've hosted here on squidoo relating to science, philosophy, religion and spirituality - and any mix of those I could come up with.

I love squidoo for all kinds of reasons, but I think it absolutely excells at making it easy to discuss difficult topics. I think you'll see what I mean when you check out my lenses below. It's more like a debate club than a forum, as I'm very much in charge of what questions get asked. However, I'm open to suggestions.

So - what's your ultimate Question?

What would you like to debate?

Vote for the question you think is most important - and add the ultimate question I forgot. After many people have voted I will create a module for the most popular question(s) (if there isn't one already)

    ?"?

Why is it necessary for Scientists to think they can't believe in G-d? Why do religious people feel the need to deny science? Why can't we feel, as Maimonides does, that if we see a contradiction between religion and science, we are obviously misunderstanding/misinterpreting one or the other?

Lets bring this question down to size. Lets say they're five people living in seclusion they have no religious up bringing and little to no sciense. Obviously they'll soon start to believe in a higher power for there lack of understanding of natural events thus bringing forth the birth of god and religion. Then comes along a modern day scientist who now can explain much of what they don't understand. As he does so the powers that God begin to diminish. Now the original five have to making choices. Do they dismiss god or, the scientist who brings knowledge... I'm pretty sure you know the out come. The people choose to stay ignorant and god fearing. The scientist is killed with his knowledge of a better world. I hope your answer is in scenario.

Do you like debating religion?

YES, these are important topics I want to get to the bottom of

iEric2010 says:

Yes and no. When the discussion is genuinely dialectical and comprised of two or more people intent on letting go of what they think they know in favor of some higher truth emerging between them, religious debate can be productive. When that same discussion becomes a battle of wills, however, it's nothing more than a distraction.

compugraphd says:

?"?

At the risk of sounding Jewish-centric, when you have the truth, you have nothing to fear from debate. IMHO

jp1978 says:

Depends on my mood. Just don't expect any questions to be answered.

Robbert_Veen says:

Only with people that don't love to hear themselves talk.

spirituality says:

I do, of course, just love debating any religious topic to the T. Sometimes it's hard to find people to debate WITH though.

NO, too much chance of being harassed

aidenw says:

All too often people hate each other and become enemies debating religion and politics. I usually avoid debating them unless I know the person is very open minded. I have a monkeybrain lens on a topic that's somewhat political and even there I occasionally get harassed :(

Organized religion versus science and atheism
This is one of those topics that just never seems to get stale online.
Defining Religion vs. Spirituality - what are they?
Spiritual people often say that they don't like 'religion'. They want nothing to do with religious organizations. What they usually mean is, as far as I can gather, that they want nothing to do with Christian organizations, or dogmas. Every other religious organisation is just lumped in the bag of 'bad', without the person having prior experience with the organisation.
Is spirituality a lifestyle or a quest? | Life style
I have been pondering recently the difference between spirituality as a life style and spirituality as a quest.
