According to the 2011 census, Calgary's population is now 1,090,936. Most years the city experiences rapid growth, due to large numbers of people moving to Calgary and natural increases because of more births than deaths. However the city's fortunes are closely tied to the energy sector, so when the oil and gas business is depressed, population growth slows dramatically. Calgary is home to many head offices, mostly related to energy, but there are significant amounts of people employed in warehouses, manufacturing, construction, tourism, and the service industry.
Calgary is a fantastic place to live if you enjoy the outdoors. The city's proximity to the Rocky mountains which are only an hour away from the west side, provides all kinds of opportunities to hike, ski, bike, canoe, or climb mountains. You can do most of those things right in the city, in the many parks such as Fish creek park which is basically an urban wilderness right in the city. There is a world class bike path system that spans the whole city and winds its way through most of those parks. There are also many golf courses, outdoor skating rinks, and community recreation centres.
For entertainment, you have anything you could possibly want, from the opera and dinner theatre, to sports such as the Flames and Stampeders. Of course you also get the Calgary Stampede for 10 days in July, which is basically a big party.
The weather in Calgary is unpredictable to say the least. Generally winters are mild, with only one or two really cold snaps where it gets to -30C at night, and you do get relief from Chinooks which are warm winds which blow in from the mountains and can push January temperatures over +10C. Summer is comfortable with warm days and cool nights. We do get a lot of sun but what looks like a beautiful day, can turn into a thunderstorm in no time at all.
Overall, Calgary is a fantastic place to live, and it is also very exciting because there is always some large project being built or some event happening. If you want to look for houses for sale in Calgary you will not be disappointed.
