Born on July 15, 1606 in Leiden in the Netherlands, his family was large and Upper class. As a boy he attended Latin school at the University of Leiden, but he favored painting so he spent three years with history painter, Jacob van Swanenburgh.
Then he spent six months with a well known painter Peter Lastman in Amsterdam. He opened a studio in 1624 or 1625 in Leiden and started to teach students in 1627.
Towards the end of 1631 he moved to Amsterdam and began his practice as a professional portraitists and was successful. During this time he stayed with art dealer, Hendrick van Uylenburg and met Saskia van Uylenburg, Hendrick's cousin and in 1634 they were married.

Rembrandt His Tragedy

Although he had a successful public career, his family life is marked by tragedy.
From 1635 thru 1641 Saskia gives birth to four children, only his last son, Titus survives.
Saskia was 30 when she died in 1642. Rembrandt hires Hendrickje Stoffels to be his housekeeper in 1649. She becomes his common-law wife and is the model for a lot of his portraits.
In 1654 Hendrickje gives birth to a daughter Cornelia.
Jeremiah Mourns Jerusalem 1630

In 1656 he runs into financial problems and tranfers his house to his son Titus so that he can save his inheritence.
Some of his property has to be liquidated.
Rembrandt cannot remarry because it would risk losing income from his deceased wife Saskis'a estate.
He also claims to have lost a majority of his paintings due to a shipwreck at sea where he loses a lot of his possesions.

Six months after his death Titia van Rijn is born and baptised in the Nieuwezjds Chapel on March 22 1669.
Rembrandt is not only a grandfather but her godfather as well.
Rembrandt is now living with Cornelia his daughter with Hendrickje.
The Flight Into Egypt 1627

Rembrandt paints three more self portraits in the last year of his life.
On October 2 1669 right before his death he is visited by Peter van Brederode an amateur genealogist who makes a record of what is left of his collection.

Doubting Thomas 1634

According to 20th century connoisseurs Rembrandt had made about 1000 paintings and etchings and almost 2000 drawings.
The Rembrandt Research Project more recently, often controversially narrowed it down to more like 300 paintings. His prints normally called etchings have a much more accurate number of just under 300.
It is likely he made more than 2000 drawings in his lifetime, but an appearance of one of those is rare.
