It is important to seek advice from your GP or health professional when you spot blood in the toilet water after a bowel movement. The reason is that faecal blood is sometimes a symptom of far more serious complaints, including colon cancer.

Your GP may send you away with some ointments, depending on your symptoms, but he may also elect to send you for a colonoscopy. This is where a camera is inserted in the anal canal and the situation is viewed under sedation. Most patients do not remember anything.
