Tips to Help You Remember to Bring Your Reusable Bags When Shopping

It's happened to most of us. Despite the best intentions to pick reusable bags over paper or plastic, there is still the problem of remembering to bring the reusable bags. You go shopping and get to the checkout line and realize you've forgotten to bring the bags...again. Instead of being able to offer your own reusable bags to bag your food or shopping purchases, you have to scramble to another option.

Every day, people forget their reusable bags and end up taking items home in more plastic or paper bags; this completely defeats the purpose of buying reusable bags in the first place.

One of my summer projects is to make bringing the reusable bags another habit.

Read on to discover some great tips compiled from resources all over the Internet. These suggestions and tips will help you remember to bring the reusable bags the next time you go to the store and the next time after that until bringing reusable bags becomes a new habit.

Got Your Bags?

3 Steps to Remember to Bring the Reusable Bags

There are three main steps one needs to take to remember to bring the reusable bags:

1. Getting the bags into the car (or taking them with you when you shop).

2. Getting the bags to the store.

3. Getting the bags unpacked and back into the car or ready to use again.

Bag Plastic Bags!

Bag the Bag from the National Geographic and Edward Norton

Paper or Plastic? Edward Norton describes a simple easy step everyone can take to help clean up the environment. In this case, it is a recommendation to "bag the bag."

Plastic is Covering Our Beaches

People in the United States are producing over 25 million tons of plastics each year and only a small fraction of the trash is getting recycled. Over 7 million tons of plastic spanning an area twice the size of Texas is destroying our oceans and harming our food chains. Animals mistake this waste for food and are dying either from plastic poisoning or blockage of their digestive system.

Memory Aids to Help Bring Reusable Bags

Memory Tricks to Help You Remember Your Reusable Bags

Remembering to bring the reusable bags is not only a problem in the United States. Samantha Booth of The Daily Record in Scotland offered these tips on remembering to take your reusable bags from memory expert Max Gordon. The tips have been modified for use in this lens.

Source: Booth S. March 19, 2009. Remember to take your re-usable bags when shopping. The Daily Record.
  1. Awareness.
Visualize a landfill mountain or the ocean filled with plastic so you will remember the impact all this waste is having.
  2. Make it fun.
Teachers and parents can make it a game. Get the children to try and spot how many people need reusable bags at the checkout; playing this game will help remind you to bring your own bags.
  3. Make re-usable bags easily accessible.
Hang one or tie one to the inside of your door. The bag serves as a visual aid to remind you every time you leave the house.
  4. Think about financial rewards.
Decide to shop only at the stores and companies that monetarily reward you ($0.05 back) for re-using bags when you shop with them.
  5. Think about what you do with your bags after you are finished using them.
Work on completing the steps. When you have unpacked your shopping put them straight into your car or somewhere you will easily be able to see them as you leave the house.
  6. Put shopping bags on your shopping list.
Put shopping bags right at the top of your list. This will remind you when you read the list, but the act of writing the words will help you remember and reinforce the habit of bringing the bags.
  7. Car keys.
One trick is to keep your car keys in your shopping bag. This way you won't be able to go anywhere without pulling your keys out of the bag.
  8. Impose a fine on yourself.
Decide that you are going to contribute a certain amount ($1.00, $5.00, $10.00) to a charity fund every time you forget to take your reusable shopping bags with you.
  9. Make up a mnemonic you can remember.
Make something up that will remind you. Gordon recommended the word 'shop' stands for Shoppers Help Overcome Problem. I like the SOS bags for Saving Our Seas.
  10. Use a visual reminder.
Put something on your refrigerator that reminds you to take shopping bags. Something as easy as a note that says "Got Bags?"

Make Your Own Reusable Box

MyZeroWaste.com provides some tips on how this family of four in the UK goes about challenging themselves to remember to bring their reusable bags.

They came up with a plan so they would never again leave the house without bag or box. They take a cardboard box and put it next to the front door.

This Going to the Store box contains:

Several reusable bags that clip on.
An assortment of plastic containers that can be used for deli purchases (meat and cheese).
    Other reusable bags.
    The box itself.
Keeping the box next to the door means it is visible when they are on their way out the door. Taking and reusing plastic containers and reusable bags is a great way to cut down on excess waste.
