Remembering Jersey Girl

Meet Jersey!
I just lost my best friend and companion, Jersey. She was 15 1/2 years old, blind, diabetic and very hard of hearing. What she was lacking in physical abilities, she more than made up for in heart. I miss her.
Most people assume I named her Jersey after the state, New Jersey. Many think she got her name because she is about the same color as a Jersey cow. But shortly after I got my sweet puppy and before a name had come to me, she managed to chew up one of my Jersey gloves. She and the glove were the same color and it just seemed like a good fit.
Like most pets (man and beast), Jersey came to have a few nicknames too. I called her "Boot" because not long after the glove incident, she chewed the tongue out of one of my hiking boots. Interestingly, they too were the same color as Jersey. Boot sometimes got changed to "Booter." I also called her "BD" for Brown Dog and Beautiful Dog.

Jersey Was Left Behind
When I found Jersey, she was about six months old, underfed, shy, and pretty much afraid of everything. She especially feared anything with a handle like a broom or shovel, which was a good hint that she was mistreated. I was not sure she could be rehabilitated enough to be a good dog. She was not aggressive, but she would cower and shake a lot.
But you know what? Jersey turned out to be one of the most loving dogs. And she was loved by so many people. It amazes me how many lives she touched. She was one of those "once-in-a-lifetime" companions.
Jersey Loved to Walk
I credit Jersey with teaching me a lot about the woods and wildlife. Her senses were so much more acute. And if I paid attention to her, I learned a lot about what was going on in the woods around me.
And Jersey was fast. No man or animal could keep up with her. Once she had it in her mind she was going somewhere, you were invited to follow but you had to go at her pace, full tilt.
Jersey was...
...a lover of life. She lived every day to the fullest and with gusto!
Jersey's Favorite Things
Jersey never became a lover of toys. she was happy with an old rug to lie on and a treat. The house never became cluttered with toys to chew on, stuffed things that squeak, pieces of rope, balls, etc.
As she got older though, she did enjoy a more plush bed than the rug she preferred in her younger days.
Beyond that, Jersey's toys were 4-wheelers, vehicles of any sort, canoes and boats. It didn't matter where she was invited to go, she just loved to go. Her favorite trip was to fish camp in Northern Canada. She would wait patiently in the boat for hours, then in the fish cleaning hut, just to get her share of fish dinner.
She took several canoe trips with me in Northern Ontario. One trip was two weeks long in Quetico Provincial Park. She was a very brave and smart dog when it came to encounters with bears and moose.
I always loaded her bed and took it with us wherever we went. She deserved that and oh so much more.

Jersey was a Chocolate Labrador Mix
I sure can recommend Labrador Retrievers. They are loyal, friendly,
happy and great with children.
And I also highly recommend Labrador mixes.
My biggest recommendation is to adopt an unwanted pet. There are many
reputable dog breeders out there. And they can provide you with a
quality pet if you are willing to spend the money. If you want a pure
breed, go to one of these reputable breeders.
However, there are many more puppy mills that take advantage of the
fact that people want to buy a pet instead of saving one. Don't support
them. There are so many wonderful dogs and cats at humane societies
across the country that are just waiting to love you.
If you are not in a position to have a dog or cat, please consider
donating to the Humane Society.

- How beautiful is that. I loved reading your remembrances Deb. Reminded me of losing Honey in 1996 and the best thing I did was pour my heart out into writing. I got so much support and felt less alone in my pain. So happy you wrote this.
