Remembrance Day

Very nice, informative, and also touching page. I remember my late husband, who served in Vietnam, suffered from his injuries for many years, and died as a result of Agent Orange exposure. Always loved, never forgotten.

    **Blessed**

Popping by your Remembrance Day lens made me remember about that day you helped me. So I would like to thank-you so much for your advice and help through the help forums.

Just came back to give this my blessing AJ. I couldn't do so last year, but I can now. I am also adding a link to it from my Brothers In Arms lens. This is such a wonderful tribute to all of those who lost their lives.

When we look at numbers like over 300 British troops killed in the Afghanistan campaign in the last few years, then compare this to over 35,000 lost on the first day of the Battle Of The Somme alone, it's staggering to think of the loss of life and how it affected the generations that came before us.

    Let us not forget...

We must remember the fighters of war
For those who fought to safe our door
And those still serving on distant shore
A speedy return to home once more

I wish I was an angel and could bless this lens. You've done a beautiful job honoring the fallen. My boyfriend is ex-Marine and ex-Army so Veteran's Day has a special meaning to him, and to me.

Wow, AJ, this is a very moving lens. Your personal thoughts are extremely touching. Why is that the human condition can be so full of hate to kill innocent people (most whom have nothing at all to do with any original conflict)? Sad isn't it, that we have lost so many lives this way and the survivor's guilt can be so debilitating. You can hardly call 'surviving war' ensuring a former quality of life to a soldier (or their families). I must keep this lens in mind for future reference. Thank you.

I can't hear the Last Post being played without thinking back to my uncle's funeral nearly 40 years ago. Then, as now, we lose our servicemen and women around the world and we should make sure that their loss is honoured and remembered.
  • stargazer00 Mar 5, 2011 @ 11:46 am | delete
I enjoyed reading about Remembrance Day in the UK. I join you in honoring the veterans. Daughter-in-law of a Pearl Harbor survivor. Wife of a Vietnam veteran. Mother of a US Sailor. Freedom is never free.

You made me catch my breath several times with this absolutely beautiful Remembrance Day tribute! I'm so glad I stopped by since Remembrance Day is just around the corner. You put this together with a lot of heart and soul, I can tell it was a labor of love for you and my heart is tender right now along with you. I was completely drawn in as I paused over the pictures and the poetry you chose quiets the soul. You have created a very meaningul experience here.

Remembrance Day isn't celebrated in Belgium any more or at least we don't get a day off for the occasion - which was nice so that we could get to the Unknown Soldier... That's great lens and placed in conjunction to the one of the Bard, it's a fantastic piece of history!

Excellent lens. I live just near the Poppy Factory in Richmond upon Thames. I'm not sure if they still make the poppies there though.
  • JaguarJulie Nov 21, 2008 @ 9:55 am | delete
Ah, the poppy is the symbolic flower of Remembrance Day? How appropriate. Perfect 'last post' tribute. That the next generation might learn from the sufferings of the past. If only we could 'give peace a chance!'

You outdo yourself with every new lens AJ. This is a very fitting lens for Remembrance Day, an occasion which should be made to mean something for children everywhere, lest we forget the sacrifice made by so many.

I found it very emotional watching the BBC clip at the Cenotaph this week with the last 3 survivors from WWI in the UK, 108, 110 and 112 years old. It brought back memories of years ago when there would be Chelsea Pensioners at the ceremony, survivors from the Boer War.

It goes without saying that this deserves 5*****.

Beautiful lens. We owe so much to our soldiers. Here, in America, they come home to poor health care. They are changed forever, and we don't do enough to help lessen their mental anguish.

Great lens and personally I lived through 15 years of war and can honestly say that they are so stupid. Wish the politicians had more sense, but sometimes it's the only thing they understand. What a waste and is why we must remember those who paid the supreme sacrifice.
  • The_Bard Nov 8, 2008 @ 5:21 pm | delete
A beautiful and poignant lens - puts my own in the shade somewhat. But I admire it greatly nevertheless, and I'm happy that together - in our own different ways - we are drawing attention to this subject.

Hmmph you had to make a better Remembrance Sunday lens than mine!

Only joking Im glad you took the time and effort to make this wonderful lens, this is a very important day for us all to remember the sacrifices for us to live our lives today!

Ill be watching BBC1 tomorrow morning to remember.
  • papawu Nov 8, 2008 @ 12:27 am | delete
Beautifully done and actually quite moving. However, I shall deny any claims to me being seen crying. But seriously, one starts thinking about all those who have lost loved ones and you thank God for the fact that you have not experienced that pain....Then you feel almost guilty and ashamed at your glee over this fact because there are simply so many torn apart by war, with losses all around the world.
  • ArtSiren Nov 7, 2008 @ 12:45 pm | delete
A lovely and touching lens. Thanks. Wilfred Owen is one of less than a handful of poets that I read regularly. My lensography has a vidclip reading of his Anthem For Doomed Youth. Great job, AJ.

Nicely done. Some avoid the tributes, museums and such regarding war as they feel it glorifies it; I go because it reminds me of the horrors, the reality. I can't look at those young faces; even if they were young 50, 100 or 200 years before and not think of the lives they never got to live. I think it's important to understand history, mistakes, realities, and the individuals.
