Remodeling for Beginners: A Warning

If you are planning to pay someone to do a home improvement project for you, please make sure you heed this warning:

Make sure that the professional you hire is really a professional!

Do not use a friend/neighbor/family member unless you have seen proof that they can successfully do this type of project.

Trust me, the money you may save is not worth the lost friendships or hard feelings if they cannot complete the project, it is not to your liking when done or worst case, they ruin your house. (Who will pay for the damages and the costs you incur to finally get it done correctly?)

Remodeling for Beginners: A Story

Years ago, my family and I moved into a pre-owned house.

The house had great "bones" (structure and layout) but the previous owners had rather interesting decorating tastes. Each room on the first floor had a different color scheme and decorating style. Nothing in the house flowed.

The first area we decided to tackle was the front hall. We wanted a painting technique done on it that I had not done before and did not have the time to work on getting it right.

So we decided to hire a professional.

However the "professional" we hired was not a true professional. It was a friend who had experience painting and decorating. She had never done this technique before but assured me that she would be able to. That was in May.

By the beginning of August when I finally had her stop, we had gone through countless gallons of paint, glaze, brushes and other supplies all at my expense. One of the six walls to be completed was actually done correctly. She never came back and our friendship never recovered.

when doing remodeling projects, it's also important to do some research. To save money and resources, simple things can be done by home owners and complicated once can be given to professionals.
