Remote light switches come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. There are many different types that operate in a large variety of ways. But the important thing about remote light switches are that they make our lives all that much more easy!

Learn all about remote light switches on this page. Learn what features can be found so you can make an educated decision when purchasing.

What Are Remote Light Switches?

Some remote light switches are designed to work from a wall electrical outlet. There is a box inserted into the socket which sports room for another plug. This allows you to plug in a lamp and control it from a remote light switch.

This switch can be installed on the other side of the room, on the outside of your child's room. Other suggested uses are for holiday lights and rooms that are not generally well lit like basements, garages and cellars. Many times people have seen these models on As Seen On TV.

Remote Light Switches That Are Remotes

Some of the remote light switches come with a light and a remote control that you carry around with you. In order to turn the lights on and off, you simply press the button and Voila. These types will usually require batteries for the remote to operate.

Sometimes people find this type inconvenient as it takes a few seconds to actually turn the light on. This causes a lag that I'm sure would frustrate any user. So make sure to read customer reviews in regards to the actual product. Typically, if it is priced over $20, it should not have the lag.

What Can You Use Remote Light Switches For?

Honestly, there are hundreds of ways to use remote light switches. Here are just a few examples that I have either used myself or read about online.

- To turn on a basement light
- To the lights and heat on in the barn before morning chores
- To turn on your bedroom light in the morning without getting out of bed (Especially useful when the room does not have any natural light.)
- To turn on the lights to your home before you enter the house
- To turn on light switches that are hard to reach
- To offer nervous children a button to turn on their light
- During construction to help eliminate frequent electrical wiring
- Many more

Skylink WS-100/WS-100N Wireless Remote Control, Channel B

If you are looking for a remote control that works from a great distance, but doesn't have to be attached to a cieling light, you want to check out a wireless remote like the Skylink WS-100/WS-100N.

This works with a lamp rather than with a wall switch. You plug the lamp into the outlet attachment and leave the lamp in the "On" position. You then use the remote control included in the set to turn the lamp on and off. This works really well if a person wants to turn a light on in their house from their car. The remote is very strong and can work from far distances compared to some of its competitors.
