How to remove hyphens/hyphenation in QuarkXPress

A quick and painless tutorial on removing hyphenation from Quark (since their built-in help menu isn't of any help). Get rid of those annoying hyphens that appear on the right side of your paragraphs without having to do hard breaks or adjusting your spacing.

A short (but hopefully helpful) Quark guide to hyphens

I've decided to create a page for the topic, just for the mere fact that I haven't been up on Quark for nearly 5 years, and couldn't seem to remember how to remove hyphens within text. Not only that, but I couldn't get the answer through their help menu, nor through Google. So, here it goes:

Step 1: Style Sheet Menu

  • Hit "Shift F11" for the Style Sheet edit menu
  • Create a "New Paragraph" (Click the New button on the lower left, choose "Paragraph..."
  • In the new menu, make sure the following is selected: "Based on: No style", "Next style: Self," "Character style: Default". Now, click the 2nd "Formats" tab, and look at the bottom of the list for "H&J". Set this to "No Hyphenation".
  • Name the style sheet (preferably something like "No hyphens"). This will later appear in your main menu.
  • Click "Ok"

Step 2: Style Drop-down Menu

  • Select an area of text in an open Quark document.
  • In the Quark main menu bar, go to "Style" and "Paragraph Style Sheet". Look for the new style you've created - called "No hyphens" (or whatever you've decided to name it)

Done!

That's it! Your hyphens should now be gone. You can now go back into the Style Edit Menu (Shift+F11) and edit your "No hyphens" rule, to add in any other rules you might need.

Fabulous, thankyou. Exactly what I was looking for. Now if they'd just add this to their own help, that would actually be helpful!
