Every time you do this you are bound to encounter some compatibly issues between your mp3 files converting to the correct iTunes format.

Duplicate iTunes songs, incorrect song information, and small sound bites from your computer are just a few of the problems you might encounter when importing music into iTunes.

This is why so many people come to me and ask,

Now you might be thinking to yourself...isn't there some sort of method that can delete duplicate songs directly through iTunes?

Well actually yes, there is a way to get rid of iTunes duplicates directly through the program itself and I will explain this method in a moment.

But the question is, if this method doesn't delete all of your duplicate songs(which is usually the case), do we really have the time to sit around for hours deleting duplicates in iTunes by hand?

I know I sure don't, and this is why I just had to track down a solution to this iTunes debacle.

After a few hours of digging through blogs and search engines my duplicate troubles soon came to an end with the help of Rinse - The Automatic iTunes Duplicate Remover.

Its genius really, the program actually scans each one of your songs and allows you to completely restore your library back to order.

Read on for more information on this handy iTunes plugin and learn about the manual method of deleting duplicates for those of you with smaller music libraries.

The Manual Method of Deleting Duplicates in iTunes

Here is how you can delete iTunes duplicates by hand

If you only have a few duplicate songs in your library than you can try using the manual method directly through iTunes. Problems tend to occur when you have a massive mp3 library like I do. In this case deleting your songs manually becomes out of the question. The following instructions are pulled directly from Apple's iTunes support page.

Step 1. Select the Music Tab in iTunes

Step 2. Go to File and click Display Duplicates.

Step 3. Select the duplicates you wish to delete.

Step 4. Press DELETE

Step 5. Message will appear asking if you are sure, you're sure.

Step 6. Try not to pull your hair out at this point because this is going to take you a long time.

Tip: Use hotkeys to select multiple songs and delete them all at once.

There are a few problems with this method. First you can't always be sure you are going to delete the right file. Most of the time you will have duplicates that differ in quality and length. Usually you want to save the song with the longest length, but if the song winds up having horrible quality and you saved it because it was 1 second longer, you're probably going to get a little frustrated.

The second problem occurs if you have any missing or incorrect song information. With incorrect song information, iTunes will not be able to identify these songs as duplicates and you will be stuck deleting them by hand. But if you library is even half the size of mine than you will definitely have an overwhelming task.

How To Use An iTunes Duplicate Remover

There is a solution to all this iTunes duplicate madness...

deleI am here to tell you my personal experience with having a cluttered, disorganized iTunes library full of duplicate songs. Because of my addiction to music and the latest releases, I used to download online or rip music from CDs like there is no tomorrow. I hate to admit it, but back then, I was obsessed with owning the most organized mp3 library among my friends. I still have that passion for having a complete and systematized collection to this day. This is what started me on my quest to find an automated script that allowed me to remove duplicates from iTunes and save me the headache.

Today, my iTunes collection has grown so big that I have about half a million songs stored on my computer and external memory. Now the biggest problem with having an extensive collection is in trying to keep it clean and organized. An organized iTunes digital media collection, to my mind, is complete with all the proper song info for every track such as the metadata on each song's artist, title, album, release year and genre. However, aside from missing or inaccurate metadata, there is the almost never ending task of trying to delete duplicates in iTunes when it comes to maintaining ones media library.

Take it from me, if you are thinking about manually screening your digital media list as your way of deleting duplicates from iTunes then you had better prepare for a major headache. Let me put it this way: If you have a digital media collection of over a thousand sound tracks and you have to pinpoint just the several pairs of duplicates in it, then your task is similar to that of looking for a needle in the proverbial haystack. Making things easy when wanting to erase iTunes duplicates is possible, if you just know what to look for.

Here is a simple FREE way to do this with no downloading needed

    1.) Open iTunes
2.) Choose File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items
3.) Sort by the date you added the song to iTunes by clicking the "Date Added" column. You may need to show this column by right clicking the sort bar
4.) Select the older items using shift-click (or the newer ones, whichever you want to get rid of)
5.) re-sort by "name" to make sure only duplicates are selected.
6.) press the delete key, or go to edit > delete

Make sure to have iTunes delete the ACTUAL files as well or the duplicates will show up again when the database rebuilds itself.

    Good luck!
