I usually keep a very neat iTunes, but I definitely have tried to navigate some friends' iTunes who could use this.

Here is a simple FREE way to do this with no downloading needed

    1.) Open iTunes
2.) Choose File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items
3.) Sort by the date you added the song to iTunes by clicking the "Date Added" column. You may need to show this column by right clicking the sort bar
4.) Select the older items using shift-click (or the newer ones, whichever you want to get rid of)
5.) re-sort by "name" to make sure only duplicates are selected.
6.) press the delete key, or go to edit > delete

Make sure to have iTunes delete the ACTUAL files as well or the duplicates will show up again when the database rebuilds itself.

    Good luck!

Thank for the comment Tim! I now have this information posted above. The problem that comes up with this method is you can't always be certain you're deleting the right duplicates(length and quality is the ideal measure). There could be a mix of new and old versions of songs causing that need to be kept along with several other road blocks.

It is also common to see duplicate songs with different meta information. Say one song is named "track 01" with a duplicate of that song named "unknown artist". In this scenario iTunes will not be able to remove the duplicate.

Regardless, always try using this method first, before taking the next step(remember to use caution with this method and not delete the wrong song). But if your still left with a mess of duplicate songs, using the software is your best bet.

    Thanks for the helpful information,

    -Joe-
