Elizabethan and Renaissance music for weddings
A course called Medieval Music: Performance Practice which I took at Yale with Professor Alejandro Planchardt really inspired my love of early music.
Almost a decade directing the Solstice Assembly and producing the annual "Solstice Extravaganza" and summer solstice shows in Durham and Chapel Hill, NC left me with a bunch of medieval and 18th century costumes in the attic. More importantly - it left me with a big supply of gorgeous early music - some of it is perfect for weddings.
Please visit the mothership, Wedding Music in North Carolina: Folk, Ethnic, and Early Music, for more information.
I own a rebec made by John Pringle and have played viola da gamba, though I don't own one. The "Wedding Music in NC" bands (the Pratie Heads and Mappamundi) are not strictly, perfectly toe-the-line early music groups, but we're in the ballpark.

Let Memory Keep Us All: The Solstice Assembly Songbook: really old songs in choral arrangements for mixed voices, mostly by Jane Peppler
Amazon Price: $14.50 (as of 06/04/2012)![]()
This book is a collection of some of the arrangements I did for the Solstice Assembly during the years when we were playing for Renaissance Fairs and other early music events. Not all the songs are of that period, but most fit comfortably into the ambience of an SCA event.
Some of the middle ages costumes currently in my attic....
I used to be a costumer and can still work that sewing machine!

- Elizabethan Music
"The Medieval era of travelling minstrels and troubadours had passed with the coming of the bubonic plague. Strangers and travellers were looked upon with fear and suspicion. Travelling was discouraged by the Elizabethan government and licenses were required for any type of travel. Street, tavern and theatre musicians replaced the travelling minstrels. Wealthy Elizabethans hired musicians to play during dinner. Elizabethan street music was played at weekly markets and the occasional fairs. Elizabethan Feasts, Fairs and Festivals were all common ... The instruments played to provide Elizabethan Street music were light and easily carried. They included fiddles, the lute, recorders and small percussion instruments. The songs and ballads sang by the street musicians were the traditional favorites - a far cry from the sophisticated and refined music of the Elizabethan court... "

- I think Elizabethan and Renaissance music would be perfect for weddings! My husband used to have a wedding video business and we heard the same popular songs over and over - it would be so wonderful to hear these pieces played instead. Blessed.
