How do I Rename my images for SEO?
When renaming images on your website you will rename the images in your image file as well as rename the images on your pages of your website.Say you want to rename an image that is on every page of your website. What I do first, is open up my HTML editor and open up each of my webpages in my HTML editor. I look to see how many places that images is on each page and keep a copy of the name of that image so that I do not forget.
I then go into my files via my FTP and download the entire image folder to my computer. You will want to have a file for just these images to your site. Do not mix them up with other images that have nothing to do with your site. I look up the image/images that I want to rename.
1. Right click on the image name
2. Click rename
3. Then Save
Now is the fun part. Open up your FTP program if it isn't already open.
On the right hand side of your FTP will be all the files for your site%u2026%u2026 Look for your image folder where you have your images for your site. The image that you just renamed in your image folder on your computer, you now want to rename that image on your site. So in your FTP on the right hand side of your FTP, in your image folder find that image. Click on that image and rename it to the name you named it on your computer.
Now on the left hand side of your FTP you will find the folder of your site images. With that folder open showing all your site images, find the image that you renamed on your computer which is the same image that you renamed on your site in the FTP.
Click on that image via the FTP which is on your computer and bring it over to over write the image. So you are now going to copy over the image with the new name from your computer to your site.
You have now renamed the image! Congratulations!
Now go back to your HTML editor where you have all your pages open with the image that you wanted to rename. Remember you copied the name of the old image, so remember that.
Find your image that you wanted to rename and now copy over the old image name with the new image name.
Example:
OLD: Image Name; your site.com/images/myoldimagename.jpg
NEW: Image Name; your site.com/images/mynewimagename.jpg
Now do this for each one of your pages where you have that image that you wanted to rename.
Once all of your pages are completed with the new image name make sure you save them to your computer in a file.
Go back to your FTP and make sure that on the right side of your FTP you are in the right files to load your site pages.
On the left hand side of your FTP you will open up the file that has all of the pages that you changed the image codes in.
Now all you do is click on those files from the left hand side of your FTP and bring them over to the right hand side of your FTP to copy over the original files.
Go to your site and refresh! Right Click on your image that you saved and you will now see the new image name.
This is a plus for SEO, Search Engine Optimization because you want your images to be named the proper name.
