The Renegade Network Marketer

If you have any history with network marketing or MLM and the usual training you get, I think you will be able to relate to this. I always felt uncomfortable and uneasy with the prospecting techniques that I was taught. Being an introvert didn't help matters. I was told to put together a names list of all my family members, friends, and acquaintances. I was told not to pre-judge anybody because everybody was my prospect. Then I was supposed to call these people up and try to get them to sit down with me and listen to me espouse on my business opportunity for which they did not have the slightest interest. From that point on, everybody shunned me and avoided me, when they saw me coming they would detour, when I called them on the phone they wouldn't answer and never return my voicemail messages. And once I exhausted my original names list, I had to go out into the world and prospect strangers. I hung out in malls, magazine stores, coffee shops, grocery store lines, etc. and struck up awkward conversations with complete strangers. If you thought talking to your friends was tough, talking to strangers was painful. Nobody was looking. My upline kept telling me, just keep on doing what I was doing and I would be successful. Just get 100 no's. Well, I got my 100 no's but I wasn't even close to becoming financially independent. So I quit, frustrated and beaten.

That was quite a few years ago, when I was young and naïve. Fast forward to now. I am now a little older, a little wiser (stress on the little), and a little more outgoing. Maybe my dream of owning a brand new Porsche and having financial independence hadn't died. Maybe I would give network marketing and MLM another go. Maybe things would be better. So a cousin of mine showed me her business opportunity and she was starting to make money. I got excited. I went to an opportunity meeting. They now used computer projectors and power point presentations. They even let distributors use email to communicate with and order online! MLM was finally starting to use technology. Surely I could make a go of it this time!

But reality quickly reared its ugly head. My name list still wasn't interested and prospecting strangers was still hard. Nothing had really changed.

That is, until I ran across Ann Sieg's ebook, The Renegade Network Marketer. After reading it, I felt that finally someone in MLM was telling me the truth. It wasn't me that was the problem, it was the methodology, the old techniques that I had been taught. She turned everything I had previously been taught upside down on its head. Ann Sieg was treating network marketing and MLM as a real business and using cutting edge marketing techniques to move the industry into a whole different realm. And I could see that I could make it work.

The problem with the old methods was that nobody was teaching you how to market. You were taught to go out and sell stuff (your business opportunity) to people that weren't interested in buying. Throw enough stuff on the wall and hopefully something would stick. There was no real targeted marketing.

What Ann Sieg teaches is attraction marketing. The job of your marketing is to bring you qualified prospects. The key is to position yourself as an expert who can help the prospect to be successful in network marketing and MLM. You need to put yourself in a position where someone who is looking to start their own business is able to find you. If someone is actively looking, which probably means they are doing searches on the internet among other activities, you need to make it easy for them to find you. And because when they are active looking mode and they find you, the expert, they have already sold themselves on what you have, the whole dynamic is different and your conversations with your prospect will be much more positive and enjoyable.

And how do you position yourself as the expert? You do this by providing the prospect with good valuable information that will help them in their business, for free. This is called educational marketing. And you invest in the prospect before they invest in you. Then as they learn more about you, you sell them additional valuable information products to help them in their business. You show people how to build a successful and profitable network marketing or MLM business before they even join. You have to show that you have valuable insight to offer and that you are worth seeking out. And the most important benefit of your offer is that you will be offering them the same marketing system that you use to build and develop your own business. By offering them an effective turn-key marketing system, you are offering them way beyond just a business opportunity. And this marketing system will work with any business they decide to participate in. This is what is going to help them build their business and this is what differentiates you from all the other people touting their business opportunities or their MLM.

Once the prospect knows you, has received valuable information from you and has access to an effective marketing system, that is the time to provide them with your business opportunity offer. At that point, the prospect is very open to working with you as you have already demonstrated to them that you are an expert in the field and that they can trust you. And all the while that you have been going through the prospecting process, you have been monetizing the process with sales of your information product. Because money is coming in, you can afford to market your business, you are not desperate with your prospects, and you can make a pretty nice side income. And your prospects are more open to talking to you about your business opportunity and your closing rate will be much higher. Now doesn't that sound like a kindler, gentler, more profitable, and more fun way to build your network marketing or MLM business?

Ann Sieg provides the Renegade Network Marketing system and numerous ways to monetize your prospecting process. She has so many ideas as to how to make extra money, you almost don't need your network marketing or MLM opportunity.
