A good automotive repair diagram provides a straight line to success. When getting ready to do your own automotive repair, the first tool that you should purchase would be a good repair diagram for the specific vehicle and repair in question.

I am an ASE Master Certified Technician with 25 years hands-on experience in the automotive repair business. I continue to seek out repair diagrams for most repairs, that I perform.

The reason being is that using a repair diagram will avoid common mistakes and possible disaster, when completing a specific automotive repair. I would like to provide a few tips and tricks to using a repair diagram correctly.

When it comes to an electrical repair diagram. I recommend that you sit down and study the circuit until you fully understand it. Work backwards from the load to the battery.

A good trick is to redraw the circuit in question with pencil and paper. This procedure is a lot better than just staring at the circuit trying to get it to soak into your brain.

By redrawing the circuit, it makes it easier for the brain to absorb. Another benefit of this procedure is that you can draw notes and record measured voltage readings on your sketch drawing that you wouldn't want to write on your repair diagram master copy.

When you are dealing with a part replacement diagram such as a water pump replacement procedure. It is also a good idea to read through all of the steps one by one and jot notes down about special tools required and parts needed. Reading through the repair steps from beginning to end will also give you a clear overview of what is involved in the job.

It may be necessary in both of the above examples to read through the repair diagram several times before it is completely understood. This is not a sign of weakness or lack of experience. I have been doing this for 25 years, and sometimes when I read through the automotive repair diagram It just doesn't seem to make sense.

Example of a Chevrolet common problem

We had a problem with what we thought was a speed sensor on a Chevrolet Silverodo. The speedometer would get stuck at 55 mph and would not return to 0. Our old fashioned Chilton manuals pointed towards the VSS (Vehicle speed Sensor). But after scanning the vehicle the scan tool registered the MPH correctly.

That meant the speed sensor was OK and the problem was in either the dash cluster or the wiring to the cluster. This time I went right for my online auto repair help program. I looked up TSB's and recalls for the vehicle and then narrowed the hundreds of documents down to a couple by choosing my symptom. Wow does the Silverado have a lot of technical service bulletins out for it!

It turns out that the manufacture knows about this problem and has extended the warranty for this failure. This is known as a special policy. The vehicle was not recalled because it was not considered a safety item and very few vehicles where effected. Well when I say very few it was less then a million trucks. This equals small to Chevrolet!

We took the vehicle to the local dealer with the print out from our online auto repair manual (All-Data) and they replaced the cluster free of charge on a vehicle that was way out of warranty by miles and time.

When it comes to what type of auto repair diagram you should purchase. I am a little biased on this subject. After 25 years of using both paper and electronic auto repair diagrams. I have truly become accustomed to using all data online auto repair manuals.

I use the professional version of this repair diagram program at work every day. There is no paper manual or other electronic auto repair diagram company that has put as much time into their program as all data. The depth of information provided for each vehicle and the pictures of the specific repair diagram are completely printable and can be brought to the repair area. This professional version is now available to the public for a yearly subscription fee of 24.95. My company paid thousands of dollars for this same information.

My favorite and most often used area of the all data auto repair diagram program is the technical service bulletins or TSB's. These technical service bulletins are provided by the manufacturer for technicians to use in the repair of automobiles. It is basically like cheating and going directly to the answer to the question.

The technical service bulletin reports on common problems for specific complaints as related to the specific vehicle. When I have a specific complaint. I go to my online auto repair program and search for a TSB for that problem. If I find one, 99% of the time this will be the answer to the car questions that I am looking for.

The reason for this is that vehicles develop common failures across the board of its make and model. If one technician has found a defective EGR valve on a certain model, Chances are, this valve will fail on many other vehicles of that same model. Study before diagnosing begins

If there's anything I hate more than math. It's reading troubleshooting manuals. The first challenge you will face is finding the right troubleshooting manual for the vehicle that you're working on. Once you find the correct repair diagram. Then you have to read it and analyze it.

Troubleshooting manuals, rule number one.

First sit down and read the repair diagram until you fully understand how the circuit works. This first step may take a little while but will pay big dividends during diagnosis.

Do not be concerned with how long this first step takes it is not a sign of weakness or lack of intelligence. If you take some time to understand the circuit and the flow of the repair diagram.

You will be able to pick out the malfunction, much quicker. Spend some time now and save some time later.
