Repairable cars for sale

This is an article about repairable cars for sale both online and at live auctions. It explains the pitfalls to watch out for with each type of auction and also provides information on how to protect yourself when buying repairable cars, damaged cars or salvage title cars.

Online car auctions

When bidding on eBay or Yahoo auto auctions for repairable cars, try to get hold of the VIN of the car from the seller on eBay so that you can run an AutoCheck vehicle history report before you even decide if you will participate in the auction in the first place. The same applies to Yahoo auctions as does with eBay auctions when bidding on cars. You should bear in mind that if you win a car auction on eBay Motors, you are contractually obliged to purchase the car. So do not bid on any car unless you are 100% prepared to purchase it. You may want to use the escrow service eBay provides to pay for the car, where the seller does not receive your money until you actually receive the car. The buyer and seller can also agree on an inspection period so that you can arrange to have a certified mechanic inspect the car and determine if there are any unsatisfactory damages, or repairs necessary that were undisclosed by the seller. All this fuss you go through when you can not see the car in person before you bid in sacrifice for purchasing the car from your armchair.

Please note that bidding on a vehicle on eBay Motors is not really any different from buying used cars from someone using Auto Trader. You still need to know the blue book value of the used car in question, and try not to bid too high. It sounds obvious but its easy to get carried away with bidding when you really want something - especially when bidding online with ease from the comfort of your armchair. If you see the price of the car rising too high then just leave it. Your aim is to get a car that is less than blue book fair market value, or its not worth bothering with. You may as well just buy a car from used car classified ads or locally. To make the hard work and risk worth it, the eBay Motors auction price has to be less than you could buy the car locally.

Reservations to watch out for with eBay and Yahoo Auctions:

  • Some sellers do not list VIN number of cars, or they list a fake VIN number. You have to run a used car title check on the VIN number for verification.
  • You are contractually obliged to purchase a car you have not yet seen.
  • You can not see the car in person.
  • Sellers can arrange several people to post fake feedback and fake bids to raise the auction price on the listed car.
  • You may have to go cross country to pick up the car, or pay shipping charges, which could possibly be several hundred dollars or more.
  • Some sellers do not list the correct settings engine specifications, or even the correct year model. AutoCheck vehicle history report should solve that problem though.

Watch out for flood cars when buying repairable cars

Hurricanes, tornadoes and storms and hurricanes flood thousands of cars each year. Where will these vehicles end up eventually? At salvage auto auctions most probably or perhaps repaired with the damage hidden so as to try to sell it at higher value than it is really worth. You need to protect yourself from this or what looked like a bargain on the auction day could end up having serious problems later on.

Modern vehicles loaded with electrical systems and electronics are highly susceptible to flood damage. It is important that you protect yourself from buying flood damaged vehicle due to errors in the electrical workings that may affect operation of safety equipment such as airbags and stability control systems.

Here are some signs to watch out for for possible flood damage:

  • Look for water lines inside the engine. Imagine sitting in a car which is in submerged in several feet of water, where would the water lines be? When a car suffers damage from floods, mud or water lines, usually manifest themself in the trunk, doorjambs, engine compartment, fuse box and ventilation systems.
  • Check the air filter. Some unscrupulous individuals do not even bother to even replace the soaked air filter, so you'll see various debris such twigs, grass, twigs and papers on the filter or inside the air intake opening.
  • Watch for new upholstery or carpeting. Nobody re-carpets the car without reason. Lift up the carpet and see if there is a mess. They do not always do a good job of cleaning. Check for rust on the door hinges, and look under the mats that are in the trunk. Look for damp, mold or a musty smell. Check the crow bar and spare tire to ensure that they do not have any rust either.
  • Check the car title search using AutoCheck Vehicle History Reports on the vehicle. This will indicate if insurance companies had to declare the car flooded or totaled.
  • Use a mirror to look under the seats. If the metal has been in contact with water, the metal bars will certainly show signs of rust.
