Overheating is the most common reason why hard drives fail. The platters are components that are very sensitive and made up with magnetic media they indeed suffer from overheating. Platters are the carriers of the actual data. Overheating can also affect the hard drive logic board, read/write head and hard drive motor. Overheating as you can see is a serious issue for hard drives.

The best thing to do is try to isolate where the problem occured. You have to ask yourself a few questions:

1. Is the drive making a clicking sound?
2. Do I hear any spinning within the hard drive?
3. Is the drive hot to the touch when I power it up for a few moments?

The reason for these questions is to form a plan of attack if you will.

If the drive is making a clicking noise it is most likely the heads. The read/write heads have probably crashed. You will need to find a drive with the exact specifications and replace the heads in the failed drive.

If you hear spinning within the drive, then we may be dealing with bad sectors only. You can connect your drive using an external enclosure and use a program like GetMyDataBack to try and retrieve your data. If that does not work, you might look a Spinrite. Sometimes this recovery software is able to read the data from the failed hard disk and move the data to a new sector so that you can safe retrieve it from the drive.

if the hard drive is hot to the touch after you turn it on for a a few moments, it usually points to a failed PCB board (the electronic board you seen from the back of the hard drive). Try to find a drive that has the exact model and revision numbers. Then visual inspect the two boards to see if they are indeed the same so that you can replace the board and then power up your drive. Remember, the boards must be identical for this replacement to work.
