Replacing a Dirty Air Filter in Your HVAC System
Ranked #10,159 in Healthy Living, #166,890 overall
Save Energy With A Clean Filter
One of the most simple tasks is also one of the most often neglected when it comes to saving energy and cutting utility costs. This is the replacement of your HVAC system's air filter.
Because you don't see it, you tend to forget about it. A dirty air filter is like throwing money out of the window.
A dirty filter also makes your heating and cooling system work harder, which results in shorter equipment life. It slows down the airflow so that your heating dollars are not providing you with the best possible results.
This one simple maintenance task can result in plenty of savings for you in both the short and long term. The process is so inexpensive and simple, it is just crazy NOT to do it.
A clean filter means a happier HVAC system as well as less dust, pollen and dirt inside your home.

Cost Versus Savings
Filters for the HVAC system are inexpensive, so buy a few of them and have them on hand when you need them.It is recommended to replace the filter at least once every three months, or more during periods of heavy usage.
The cost of the filter is generally LESS MONEY than what you lose in wasted energy on a dirty one.
There are some systems that allow you to simply wash the existing filter and return it to the unit. The manufacturer instructions are a suggested guideline to see if washable filters will work in your system.
Washable filters are not designed to last forever, and over time will undergo wear and tear and require replacement. The washable filters generally cost more, but they last much longer, so the tradeoff may be worth it in the long run depending on how much wear you get from a more expensive washable filter.
Do not attempt to clean a disposable filter that was designed to be thrown away. Only those designed to be washable should be re-used in this way.
Adding that to the fact that it increases the life of your HVAC system, an air filter replacement regime simply Makes Sense.
Dirty versus Clean HVAC Air Filter
See the difference?
Take a look at these two air filters. It is easy to see how air flow is restricted when a dirty air filter is not replaced with a new one.The dirty air filter does not allow air to pass through, and it imparts unhealthy particles into the air including dust, pollen, and dirt.
A quarterly replacement is usually sufficient, but it doesn't hurt to do a periodic check in between.
Replacing the Filter Is Easy as 1-2-3
No HVAC Repair Man Needed!
You do not need an HVAC service repairman to replace your filter. It is a very simple task.First, buy filters that fit your unit. You can measure the one already in your unit, or check to see if the information is printed on the existing filter (it usually is).
Purchase several to keep on hand. They are inexpensive and you will be more likely to change when needed when you have replacement filters around.
Simply remove the old dirty filter and replace it with the new. That's all there is to it!
This process performed quarterly will save you money, extend the life of your HVAC equipment, and give you healthier and cleaner air to breathe.
If there are periods when the unit is used heavily, as in extreme heat or cold, the filter may require more frequent replacement. It is advised to check the filter monthly to be sure.
1. Access the filter which is near the inside fan unit of the system.
2. Slide out the old filter.
3. Replace with a new filter if your system is using disposable filters.
4. If your system has re-usable filters, wash the filter per the manufacturer instructions and return.
