Video: Spring toad calling for a mate
I captured this singing toad video in early spring on a cool but sunny afternoon. This singing toad's skin is still dark and damp from a long winter sleep in the black mud near our garden pond and rain garden. It's calling out to find a mate because it's found the perfect little pond in which to lay eggs for the next batch of tadpoles who will live in the pond until they grow into toads in the summertime and move out of the water to live on the land.

Amphibians and Reptiles
Reptiles live on land but they like to be near water and spend time in the water swimming and feeding. Most reptiles hatch from eggs but they're are cold-blooded. Amphibians start life in the water, then develop lungs and live on the land. Like reptiles, amphibians are cold-blooded animals and must regulate their body temperature using the environment. Both reptiles and amphibians like to bask on warm rocks or in the sun to stay warm.National Geographic on Amphibians and Reptiles
Amphibians lead double lives-one in water and one on land. Many begin life with gills, then develop lungs as they age. They are vertebrate animals that include frogs, toads, salamanders, and newts as well as odd, wormlike caecilians (seh-SILL-yuns). They are cold-blooded, using the environment to regulate their body temperature. Early amphibians were the first animals to leave the sea and venture onto land, forming a crucial link from fish to terrestrial reptiles.
Reptiles have been around for 300 million years, and during the age of the dinosaurs, they ruled the Earth. Those days are long gone, and those giants have vanished, but some 6,500 species of reptiles still thrive today. Crocodiles, snakes, lizards, and turtles are all reptiles. Most reptiles live on land, and most lay eggs. They are vertebrates, and, unlike any other animals, are covered in scales. They are cold-blooded, and regulate their body temperature by seeking or avoiding the sun's heat.

This snake enjoyed the warm rocks of the retaining wall outside the door to my artist studio in late spring.

About Pastiche
Until I was a teen ager I spent hours catching and releasing all sorts of amphibians and reptiles. I still stalk them, only now I just capture them in photographs and leave them alone in their natural habitat. Sometimes I discover amphibians and reptiles living in my own back yard.
