Getting To Know Me: NOT Like Peeling an Onion
I have problems with this simile (and with the metaphor, since this is both), because when you reach the core it is, pretty much, exactly the same material as the rest of the onion. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of discovery inherent in that, although potential for crying is high -- almost to the point of inevitability.
I think getting to know someone is more closely akin to creating a marble sculpture. You are confronted, initially, with a block of material, amorphous of shape and free of expression. With careful, thoughtful application of tools, you begin to chip away at the marble. The labor is difficult, challenging, You remove chunks and shards of irrelevant, unnecessary material as you work to reveal the form within. Too little effort and you won't get very far. Impatience or clumsiness can cause you to remove too much, shattering important pieces beyond recovery.
If you are successful, arduous labor and evanescent inspiration will lead to a shape, a figure more or less detailed according to your skill and according to the quality of your tools and the flaws in the marble. Whether that shape is the whole truth -- or just one of many possibilities -- is something you may never know for sure.
You might end up with a sculpture of an onion.
Talking About Myself Makes Me a Little. . .
Things that interest me: Family, friends, reading, writing, exploring the Internet, blogging, Squidoo, Scrabble, grammar and wordplay, gems, book making, handmade paper, miniature books, design (books, jewelry, rooms), children's literature, medical information... and a host of things that catch my attention for some space of time before either fading or becoming permanent interests.
Things that almost never penetrate my consciousness: Housework, cooking, sports (although I do watch poker tournaments on TV and have also watched a Scrabble tournament. I also recently discovered that golf is oddly soothing to watch on TV),
I Enjoy: Reading (mysteries, romance, fantasy, fiction with humor, occasional poetry, nonficton about subjects that interest me), spending time with family and friends, spending time alone, watching tv and movies, designing books, making cards, doing logic puzzles, and learning new things. Last year, I had a wonderful experience collaborating on a virtual Masked Ball with a couple of online friends. Part of that little adventure included collaborating on a serialized story built around our adopted ball personae that reached its denouement during the Masked Ball.
I am a collector -- of beach rocks and gemstones, children's literature, web links, old keys, marbles... I have a penchant for typefaces and miniature chairs and I adore boxes. I like to put little treasures into my little boxes so as to encounter them unexpectedly at some later date. I can crochet, kind of, but that small ability has nothing to do with the skeins and balls of colorful yarn I can't resist buying on occasion. I also can't resist handmade and marbled papers. One of my relatively new interests is the jewelry of designer Barbara Bixby, particularly her keys.I like to laugh and have a dry sense of humor that some people appreciate and others do not -- and a keen sense of the ridiculous. Not all of my humor is politically correct, but I choose my audience with care. I have a soft spot for kitsch and quirky things(a number of my lenses are centered in those areas) and take pleasure in oddity. A lot of things interest me -- and I never know what next will catch my fancy.
I'm an introvert -- both in terms of shyness and in terms of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (I'm INTP). Often, people to whom I respond don't realize that I'm shy; people to whom I don't respond think I'm a block of wood. I always annoyed my mother by arguing the other side of whatever we were discussing (oops, make that present tense). I'm an "on the other hand..." kind of person.Squidoo and blogging are both relatively recent areas of interest for me and I'm giving them my usual obsessive attention. As with the introvert thing, I'm very binary about my interests: On or Off. When I'm interested, I tend to immerse myself, at least until I've reached a reasonable level of knowledge. When I'm not interested, it's pretty much white noise.
Among my weaknesses: plummy British speaking voices (Alan Rickman, Michael York), honey-gravel singing voices (David Cook), Alex O'Loughlin, movies that open in Art Deco hotel lobbies, dry British comedies, 1980s American soap dramas. Love Actually is one of my favorite movies. A list of my favorite books cannot be compressed into as few as 100 titles but authors include Christie, Heyer, Barrie, Shaw, Wilde, Austen, Nesbit, Lewis, Tolkien, Gallico, Pullman, Carroll, O. Henry, Batten...
By vocation and by avocation, I'm an editor. If I walk into a house, I mentally rearrange furniture and knock out walls. I look at a piece of jewelry and start sketching modifications.
I'm good at solving problems -- even some of my own... I seem to have a knack for solutions. A friend, who has been trying to figure out a "label" for what I do, calls me a creative consultant. I can almost always see options and possibilities. This often translates to optimism, but I'm also a little too good at foreseeing possible consequences and/or negative outcomes. My daughter finds this aspect annoying, since I'm right more than I'm wrong. So far...

Did I mention that I'm a huge David Cook fan? Can't get enough of that honey-gravel voice. This is a wonderful album, thematically cohesive, conceptually intriguing, and the music is great. Buy it.

A Few Books I've Designed and Produced
Two one-of-a-kind bindings of miniature books I designed and published. Left Gemological Pharmacopoeia, on the curative uses of gemstones through the ages. I wrote this book in addition to designing it. Right: One-of-a-kind binding of Erte' Maquettes: 44 fuil color images of previously unpublished miniature paintings. Miniature books.
FYI: Generally, miniature books measure 3" or less in their largest dimension. Some are much smaller. Mine measure between 2" and 3".
Miniature Book Reference
Miniature Books: 4,000 Years of Tiny Treasures
Amazon Price: $25.16 (as of 06/03/2012)![]()
This is a thorough and detailed book written by authorities in the field of miniature book collecting and publishing. It is a coffee table book with many color plates and it contains a historical perspective on miniature books and sections on the state of modern miniature book publishing..
Some Favorite You Tube Clips
Including West WIng and My Fave Commercial
I think the feta cheese commercial is hilarious. It's possible that my Greek heritage has something to do with, because I've been to a lot of big, noisy family events in which Greek dancing figures prominently...
Also featured are a couple of favorite scenes from the West Wing and the classic Taxi video of Reverend Jim renewing his driver's license, which always makes me laugh.
I like to laugh.
I've Danced a Time or Two
With the Medical Establishment
I also did the infertility dance, at a time when a lot of today's technologies were either unavailable or were in their infancy. Despite that, technology worked in my favor. Once again, lessons learned and an incalculable treasure as an end result.
Both experiences brought their share of humorous (and just plain ridiculous) events. One day, I might share those in a lens.
Squidoo Recognition
Awards, Blessings, and Things I'm Proud Of
I've met with extraordinary kindness and support within the Squidoo community. Angels have been generous with their blessings (along with helpful suggestions, lovely compliments, and general friendliness), and I've met some wonderful people and seen remarkable lenses from people who have stopped by one of my lenses and left comments.
I'm honored to say that among my lenses I've had four named LOTD (including this one!), a Summer Sunshine award, 13 Purple Stars, and two Squid Reviews! So this little section lets me toot my own horn and say thank you to everyone who has encouraged me. I'll try to pay it forward.
I finally completed my 100th lens in October and am now an official Monster Squid. Happy about that. The next level is 150 lenses away...
I've decided to list the lenses that have received recognition, as a way of keeping track and because -- frankly -- I'm proud of them!

- I think in some ways we might be kindred souls.
I wrote a piece once about the well known story of Michaelangelo commenting that David was always within the stone--all he did was remove everything that was not David.
I said that surely our purpose in life is to realize that we are both Michaelangelo AND David. That our life's work is to chip away all that is not who we are and reveal the masterpiece that was always there within the stone.
I said that we are all--each of us-exquisite and unique. But that no one else can choose to reveal that beauty and share it with the world. It is a task left to us. It is the work which only we can do.
I will enjoy reading your work. :)

- I love your take on this -- the idea of chipping away the "not-me" to get to the "me". Yes, that Michelangelo story was in my mind when I wrote the intro.
