Alternatives to Abandoning Your Dog

I don't want to find one more abandoned dog! Find another option!
Every year more and more dogs are abandoned in the country by their owners. These dogs are frequently hit by cars and then die from their injuries. Dogs that are abandoned from a home have no way of knowing how to take care of themselves in the country. Many times they die from starvation.
If someone finds them, like this poor dog, it is often too late and even with the best of care they don't make it.
Even in the city people dumping their dogs have led to dog packs that are becoming dangerous. These dog packs are attacking other animals and people.
There are many alternatives to dumping your dog off in the country or abandoning them in the city.
I hope to highlight some rescue organizations that will take your dog or if you contact them might help you find a place for your pet if you can no longer keep it.
If you do not need to find another home for a pet, remember all these rescues and shelters generally are nonprofit and continue running on public donations. If the spirit moves you, why not send them a little cash and rescue an animal in your own way!

“More than 12 million dogs and cats are euthanized in shelters each year. Millions more are abandoned”
Abandoned Dogs are not only a rural problem
there are more and more abandoned dogs in the city
Long ago, before I moved to rural Kansas I lived in Brooklyn, NY. I worked for an assertive community treatment team for people with mental illness. I spent much of my day traversing the projects of Central Brooklyn. That's where I adopted my first abandoned dog. This adorable German Sheperd puppy came walking up to me one day. I gave him a quick pat and then went on my way.
He followed me. I noticed his collar was too tight, and had almost grown into his neck. He would not stop following me, so finally when I got to a busy street I took the strap off my briefcase and used it as a leash, and from then on we've been family.
Scrappy has been a part of my family for almost 13 years now. He's been with me through thick and thin, through 2 husbands and a move to rural Kansas.
He is the most loyal and loving dog. Some days when I see his feet running when he's sleeping and hear him whimper I wonder if he remembers his oil covered, collar grown in, abandoned dog days in Brooklyn.
I hope not. I choose to believe he's chasing rabbits instead. ;)

- Dog abandonment is a huge problem in Puerto Rico. I wrote a lens about it - the stray/street dogs are called "Satos" there. So sad.

- Thanks for this lens, we can't have enough of them. I appreciate the work that people do to save these abandoned dogs. It's our responsibility, and we should take that seriously. I saw in a video called 'Earthlings' how in some shelters they just put a lot of dogs in a large box and gas them; absolutely horrid.
