Meet Baxter, Whom Ulysses The Dog and Zen Master Saved From The Jaws Of Death!

We saved a dog yesterday from death. As it was, he was nearing death when we got to him. This picture shows the Conestoga where we saved him from.

His death would probably have been peaceful, though.

The Story Of Baxter

Old Baxter, friend of Mukunda, who just turned 13 last week, slipped his tether up on the hill and ran for freedom to the river.

Tom woke me up to tell me to bring a lead for Ulysses, who was the one who found Baxter stuck in the mud in the cold water. Then Ulysses picked a fight with him. From Hero to Buffoon in the space of five minute's time.

I took muddy Uly into the house, prepared some Miracle Drops for Baxter, and went to help Tom hoist the dog up the river embankment to safety.

To the God/ess of Ulysses and Baxter and all the dogs of this world, hear this: we humans are willing to crawl around in the mud to save your lives. And even though Ulysses wanted to pick a fight with you, dear Baxter, in reality he's the one who saved your life.

Then What Happened?

Earlier, Tom and G were going to go swimming at the Y, but G called at the last minute and canceled. Did G save your life, dear Baxter?

In reality, a whole orchestration of helpers synchronized to save your precious life.

When Mukunda was in his prime, he'd go visit Baxter on the hill sometimes three times a day. Once in a while, Muki ate Baxter's food, but mostly he went for the comradery. Then when Ulysses joined our family, Muki and Uly went up to visit Baxter together.

One Easter, Ulysses stole an Easter Bunny toy from Baxter. Six weeks later, Baxter broke his tether and came down to our house looking for his toy. When I saw him running up the lane with bunny in mouth, looking over his shoulder to see if Ulysses was following, I immediately called his mistress.

I said, "Your dog is brilliant! He remembered where his toy bunny was for weeks and when he got away, came down to our house looking for it.

"Never underestimate the memory of a dog for his toy."

Healing As A Way Of Life

Does the healing journey ever end? The short answer is "no," even if you think it ought to end.

A good example is Ulysses' so called tumor. I mistakenly thought that Ulysses took the passing of his soul mate Mukunda very well in January of this year. But he required his very own healing path well beyond the diagnosis of "Cancer," or tumor or any other manifested symptom.
Any actual physical illness or diagnosis represents a microcosm to the macrocosm of healing. Beneath any diagnosis or illness lies a complex set of spiritual, physical and emotional dynamics.

We give our spirit a gift as we look at illness not as a problem in need of repair, but as a profound depth of being that longs to be realized, but rarely is due to the human tendency to lose patience with the process. Thus we fail to take the only journey worth taking: The excavation of Self, allowing all else to fall away.

This excavation involves a detachment from everything that has gone before: the need to win, the need to be right, old victim wounds, resentments, and any ideas, theories, or concepts we may have previously held about God/ess. This process is really just a letting go of fear to embrace Only Love. Illness often falls away as we stand in the healing light of spirit.

What is healing, really? We explore this here and in our lives. Healing is a way of life. We realize we may never arrive to a place where we are finally healed.

But what is happening is an ever greater ability to see through the "eyes" of the soul.

I've had many opportunities to save animals from harm. I don't like to see any animal harmed. It has been my experience that the animals whom we save are extremely special, forever after their ordeal. For sure, there is a very special bond that develops between an animal an' his/her protector.

What a great story. I think Great Pyrenees are so beautiful and amazing to watch. The Goat Farm here uses them to help on the farm and I could watch them for hours on end. Thanks for sharing this story and glad that Baxter was rescued from the muddy river.
