Wow, this is great information. I have been tempted to purchase Jaaxy and other tools, but this seems sufficient. Am I limiting myself?
  • aj2008 May 1, 2012 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Jessica - I dont think you are limiting yourself by sticking with the Google tool. I use that one the most and am finding it serves me very well. I have tried Jaaxy but it is too soon to say how effective it is.

One thing I would say is dont pay any money for any keywoprd research tools until you are sure that you really know what you are doing.
  • Steve-SEO-UK Apr 13, 2012 @ 5:02 am | delete
Definitely taking your advise AJ - and as always, sooooooooo helpful.
Just one point that came up somewhere else I was reading on Keyword Research and using Google Keyword Tool. It stated to use Exact Match to get a true Search Volume figure which turns out to be a lot less that other options. Could you give advise on this? Best regards, Steve
  • aj2008 Apr 13, 2012 @ 12:05 pm | delete
Steve, I know opinion is divided about researching keywords using "broad match" and "exact match", but personally I find "broad match" works very well for me - it is also useful for suggesting variations of a keyword that you may not have thought of :)
  • Steve-SEO-UK Apr 14, 2012 @ 2:01 pm | delete
Thanks AJ and I take on board your comment on added variations of keywords using broad match. All the very best, Steve

Awesome lens, how did you get Adwords to show squidoo pages in a column though?
  • aj2008 Apr 13, 2012 @ 12:03 pm | delete
Thank you :) As for the figures, I do say in the module: "In this screenshot I have added two columns of figures:

    1) Pages on Google

    2) Squidoo Lenses"

I added the figures myself in order to better explain how it works.

VERY GOOD insight information about the keyword. helped me a lot..
  • PeterStreep Feb 27, 2012 @ 5:48 am | delete
wow, great article, it helped me a lot. Only google Adword has changed and uses the words Low,Medium and High to tell you the Competition status, instead of a bar. And if you download the file, the numbers of the competition are 0,24 or something like that. I think you have to multiply it by 10.000 to get the same formula. So I use competition*10.000/global monthly searches. Is this correct, or do I something wrong ?
    Great Great article. thanks
  • aj2008 Feb 27, 2012 @ 7:00 am | delete
Peter, you need to ignore the Competition "High", "Medium" and "Low" - this refers to the number of sites paying for those keywords as Adwords.

To properly asses the number of competing pages, you must research that yourself by typing the keyword or phrase within " " in A Google Search Box.

My eyes tend to roll up in my head when you get too techy, but I persevered and took things in small bites and made it through. Thank you so much for this step by step how to do it! I really appreciate it. And in case you didn't know; if you don't have excel, check and see if you have Microsoft Works installed, it has a spreadsheet that does most of what excel does and will work for this ;-) I'm adding this to my link list on My First 6 Months on Squidoo.

As a full-time college student and mom I do not always have the time to promote my lenses everywhere, but I have seen a big difference in the stats for the lens I made after reading this lens. In the new Keyword Tool, they have eliminated the green bars and replaced them with the values low, medium and high. When do you your research, do you tend to focus solely on the low competition keywords? Thanks for writing up such an informative lens about keywords. They are hard to come by. Heather
  • aj2008 Nov 16, 2011 @ 12:43 pm | delete
Ignore the competition column in the results that the search tool gives you, this refers to Pay Per Click Competition and not the actual number of competing pages. You MUST reseach the number of actual pages competing for the keywords, using the method I describe.

I generally tend to go for low competition keywords, but just sometimes I may try for a high competing keyword. I tend to do this when either none or very few sites have the keyword in the URL.

Excellent info. thanks for sharing. Have a question, though. I read somewhere that it's better to name the website or a lens with the dashes between the keywords (i.e. my-lens) versus without them (mylens). What's your advice? Does it make a difference? Thanks again.
  • aj2008 Sep 8, 2011 @ 6:34 am | delete
My top lens has no hyphens or underscores: bullyingatprimaryschool. My second top lens is: lose_weight- My third lens is goldfish-swims-upside-down

I should add that the bullying lens was made when I was completely ignorant about proper keyword research and I got lucky. But I generally tend to break up the words with hyphens, unless the URL I want is already taken, in which case I will then look at underscores.

But there's other lensmasters I know who just let the words run into each other, without the hyphens.

So I guess I am saying that providing the keywords, content and backlinks are strong, then you should do OK whichever format you use for the URL.

And there's others who believe the keyword in the URL is not so important - I disagree because I believe that having it in the URL will give you an edge over the competition that does NOT have it in the URL.
  • LissaKlar Sep 6, 2011 @ 5:54 pm | delete
Good information and tips. I have to admit it all still confuses me somewhat.
  • aj2008 Sep 8, 2011 @ 6:25 am | delete

Useful article, my question is whether the URL in the Squidoo Lens I should be the same with my Main Site?
  • aj2008 Aug 15, 2011 @ 3:24 pm | delete
That depends on how strong the keyword is in the URL of the main site!

In my opinion the Squidoo URL needs to be the strongest of your keywords (assuming the URL has not already been taken) AND because all this keyword research applies to blogs and websites in addition to Squidoo lenses - then yes, your blog needs to have the same keyphrase in the Domain name - which is why I say do the research BEFORE you grab a URL or buy a domain :)

  • luvmyludwig Aug 12, 2011 @ 4:50 am | delete
I need my favorite button back! Thanks for this much needed help. I've been doing this pretty much, but the excel thing is brilliant! One question, do you use a broad or exact search on adwords keyword tool?
  • aj2008 Aug 12, 2011 @ 8:17 am | delete
I tend to start with the broad match function, because not only will it search for the phrases I type into the search box, but it will also suggest related keywords that I may not have thought of.

Then I use the exact match, once I have found some possible keywords to try to narrow the niche even further.

To be honest I just play around with it, until I find something that has reasonable search volume and low competition.
  • luvmyludwig Aug 12, 2011 @ 9:24 am | delete
I often find keywords with the broad search that seem to have good search volume, but then when I try the exact it goes down considerably. I just didn't know which to go with when looking at search volume. I know there are no exacts to anything though, just wasn't sure what you used above when considering competition to search volume.

I use adwords and some tips I learned in the google page on the search box. I should get into those good paid keyword programs out there like wordtracker, but I cannot have more weight on my budget. Maybe when I get more Lens on Squidoo and learn more I start to get into that.
Also I think keyword research is very important for Squidoo and for websites in general. Guess the trick is always to find the right one with a good balance.
  • Cumberland Jul 8, 2011 @ 7:52 am | delete
Thanks for the information. I think AdWords is the better of the free search tools. There are others such as Word Tracker, etc that may offer some alternatives to the keywords provided by Google.

I used this method for keyword research and found a phrase with low competition, and am ranking on the first page of Google for that phrase, but not getting any traffic to my lens. What do you suppose is wrong?
  • aj2008 Jun 7, 2011 @ 9:57 am | delete
It is good that your phrase is getting low competition but how many people are actually searching for that phrase? The lower the number then the more difficult it is to get traffic.

This is the single most helpful lens on keywords I have ever found. Simple and effective. Thanks so much for posting in the forum to guide me here. I am truly grateful.

Caveat: I don't have excel, but I do have a calculator. I'll be using that instead of dumping more money into MS. Thanks again.

This is fantastic information, and SO clearly laid out that I think virtually ANYONE could follow your keyword research method.
I have recently begun paying more attention to keyword research, but was not doing all the things you presented here, and i really appreciate your use of the numeric guidelines.

Don't forget to look at the "Exact" search volume as well as the default "Broad" volume that the Google keyword tool gives you. The difference can be huge, and your real-world results are likely to be closer to the exact numbers than the broad numbers.

This lens is wonderful. I wanted to ask you what is considered "spammy" in your keywords. If I was to take all the top Google searches for my content (lets say 50). Is that too many? I want to be found and not shunned from the SEO I guess that's what I am saying.
  • aj2008 Dec 21, 2010 @ 7:23 am | delete
First of all the Top 50 Google Searches, may not be the best keywords - no point trying to feature a keyword that has 100,000 searches but 2 million pages in competition.

And yes, stuffing your lens with 50 keywords may be viewed as "keyword stuffing" by the Search Engine Spiders, who will then label the page as Spam.

Take just a few good keywords for each page. If you have a topic that has numerous good keywords then make a series of different but related pages on the same topic - but remember the content needs to be unique on each page.

And remember a "good" keyword is one that has high search volume but low competition.

Just the info I need. I am now starting to search my keyword after 50+ lenses. At least, am starting.
  • aj2008 Nov 8, 2010 @ 2:42 am | delete
Yes, I had quite a few lenses before I started to learn about keyword research and I also have a lens that is doing badly despite the keyword research! I need to have a good look at it and see what is going wrong.

Even with older lenses, you can always go back, do the research and hopefully help them to perform better. And even where you have done the research you should do it again every so often - particularly with lenses that were doing well and then all of a sudden are not.
  • Amarant Oct 26, 2010 @ 5:37 am | delete

  • aj2008 Oct 26, 2010 @ 2:20 pm | delete

  • aj2008 Oct 20, 2010 @ 6:18 am | delete
Sometimes Google ignores lenses for awhile no matter how well optimized they are, but then the traffic starts to grow as the lens "matures" - I have lenses that were published a year ago that are nowranking high and getting good traffic.

The Google keyword tool is an enigma inside a riddle wrapped in a mystery. When I follow your tutorial and enter in "Chicken recipes" I get a whole bunch of results, just like you did. BUT, when I enter in "iPad"... Now you would think this would bring up all kinds of phrases: iPad docks, iPad cases, iPad apps, iPad for business, iPad for education and 1000 others. But what does the keyword tool bring up? Exactly FOUR relevant results: iPad, iPads, ipadi and ipade (have no idea what those last two are). I have "Use synonyms" checked. When I add the two relevant keywords to my "Selected Keywords" list and click "Get more related keywords," it STILL returns no more relevant results! I'm afraid keyword research and the Google research tool will remain a mystery for me.
  • aj2008 Sep 30, 2010 @ 10:27 pm | delete
Just occasionally I find that the results of some keyword research is rather strange or unexpected, but on the whole most of the time the searches I do are extremely useful.

Too many times, people dive into designing and developing a Website or Lens without giving Keyword Research a thought. Your step by step description has been put together to which even a novice would be able to follow with ease.

I personally learned something, and that was to analyse the number of competing Squidoo Lenses.

Definitely got a vote from me and I have tweeted this Lens.

    Many thanks,
    Steve

  • Greekgeek May 21, 2010 @ 11:08 am | delete
Happy birthday, AJ! I kept not getting around to checking this out since I already do keyword research. You have a good method and explain it very well! I wonder if, when checking competition, I'm dwelling too much the number of competing pages that are OPTIMIZED for a search phrase. That is, instead of counting to see how many other pages there are on the keyword phrase, I'm looking to see how many there are with the phrase in the URL or title.

I really like your chart. I hadn't been quite that disciplined and organized. I'd make note of "here's good search volume" and put that keyword phrase into a text document as a possible, then I'd check all the possibles when I went to the next step and winnow the list down, but I never put ALL the relevant figures on one chart. I think you also are less satisfied than I am -- you keep doing keyword research longer, whereas I stop about one step sooner than you, thinking, "good enough."

Just goes to show that there's an art to keyword research like everything else. Anyway, I shall add a link to this lens from my Squidoo SEO page where I give my own keyword research recipe. Thanks!
  • makingamark May 21, 2010 @ 3:28 am | delete

  • Susan52 Apr 19, 2010 @ 10:22 am | delete
Thanks so much for making this lens! One additional factor I've been noticing lately is the suggested keywords at the bottom of the google search pages. For instance, searching for baked chicken recipe, suggestions at the bottom include baked boneless chicken recipe, healthy baked chicken recipe and six more. And of course there are the suggestions as you type in your search term, the most common one being "recipes" instead of "recipe." Argghhhh! No matter how much work we do to optimize our keywords, it seems there are always factors we can't control. I'm sure you said it somewhere up above, but obviously content is still the most important factor of a lens. Even though "build it and they will come" is not a good philosophy, "choose the best keywords then provide excellent content" is about the best anyone can do. Anyway, you did a fabulous job presenting this and I will continue to use your tips. Thanks again!
  • AndyDad Apr 18, 2010 @ 7:09 pm | delete
I use google keywords as well, but not to the extent you have shown here. This is a great lens, I now have a much better understanding of keyword research and am itching to get to work on it. Info is presented very clear and easy to follow, which is not always the case with other keyword research articles I have read. Thanks a bunch for this - it is on my favourites.

I'm always looking for good info on keyword searches. My SEO skills are kinda weak so anything that is easy-ish to comprehend makes me happy. :) Thanks for this.

Very good, very helpful and well researched. Going to feature this on my keyword lens and come back again. Thank you for sharing your insights.

Excellent! Thank you so much for this information. Letting us tag along on your keyword research was SO helpful. My lightbulb of understanding is flickering and even starting to stay on for a while now and then.

Well-done and useful. A year ago, I hadn't a clue about search engines, SEO etc. I still don't know as much as I should.

Excellent AJ!!! Tons of helpful information here. Another great lens by you. Blessed by a Squid Angel :)

Wow, you've done your homework! This is very informative. That last part about keyword stuffing is important too. That can really kill a lens/blog/hub, and it makes it unreadable. You have to find a happy medium between SEO and readability. Thanks for these tips!

This is very , very helpful. I've only recently realised that I should research keyswords before I start. I've always just jumped in without thinking. Not any more! Thanks aj.

Great lens on something that has been a bit of a mystery to me from the beginning. I have learned a great deal, including the research before writing which is completely new to me. Thank you and 5*

Some very useful information here in a nicely constructed lens. You mention that you can ignore advertiser competition because we are not researching an adwords campaign which is very true. However, I would add a caveat to that :-) The Advertiser competition does give you an indication that there are people who are willing to spend money advertising and that therefore the traffic in the particular niche has value. Which means there's money to be made in the niche if you target correctly :-)

Thanks Paul and yes,as I know you realise, this lens was born out of an exercise in
simple Keyword Research that needed fitting into a 20 minute radio slot :) Looking at Advertiser level would be the next step
  • mbgphoto Apr 7, 2010 @ 10:41 am | delete
Excellent information. I just got in on the last part of the radio chat, so I was really glad to see this lens with the information. Thanks.

Excellent! Absolutely superb information on the research of keywords for the articles and blog posts that we find ourselves writing.
  • lakern26 Apr 6, 2010 @ 6:56 pm | delete
This lens is fascinating! Like many others, I constantly struggle with keyword research, so these step-by-step instructions are very, very helpful. I do have a question, though, about Google Adwords ... how were you able to add the "Pages on Google" and "Pages on Squidoo" columns?
  • aj2008 Apr 7, 2010 @ 3:19 am | delete
Thank you lakern26 - I am so pleased that this lens is helping you. The columns for "Pages on Google" and "Pages on Squidoo" were manually added by me using Microsoft Publisher. I took the screen shot showing the GMSV, then added the columns and then added the figures myself as I researched them.

I thought it would be helpful for people to see the comparisons.
