Beagle Freedom Project - Lab Animal Rescue

The name Lucky is symbolic for all of the souls in this lens. My daughter sent me to a site (http://beaglefreedomproject.org) and a video that featured a rescue of beagles who had been used for animal research purposes. The group ARME (http://arme.tv) received a call on June 6th that 9 beagles were being released after being used for research. They sprung into action and rescued these dogs 2 days later.

Hopefully this lens can inspire us to wonder whether all animal research is necessary and to support groups like ARME that do such great work. Who knows what type of research animal experimentation was being done on these guys?

When we were first dating, my spouse shared a house with a sister, who had a beagle. I was so impressed by this dog, and how it seems to be the center of so much activity in the house.

The Rescue

These dogs have a first taste of freedom

Have some tissues ready when you watch this...
It is awful to think of these guys sitting in cages waiting for the next poke and prod! I'm so glad they have now seen the light of day.

Where did "Lucky" come from?

"Lucky" (the name that could apply to all of these guys), not for their past, but for the future thanks to ARME, came from a research facility that was using these dogs for research experiments. The exact location of the facility is unknown (to me), but is a 6 hours drive from Valley Village, CA 91607.

Lucky and all of his friends had never been outside, had never stepped on grass, smelled fresh air - or as beagles love to do, run free.

How about a thumbs-up

It's all in a name "LUCKY"

Not only are these dogs lucky to finally get rescued, but for anyone who has been chosen by a rescue dog to be a forever home, they will quickly realize that they are equally as lucky. Amazingly, even after the horrendous treatment many dogs receive from humans, they continue to be such a source of love and hope. I take this not to be a sign of their lack of thought, but rather an indication that their evolution may be ahead of ours on many levels.

One of Lucky's favorite things

Having a place to call their own can be very important for an adopted dog. In our case having one dog already, and adopting a traumatized Katrina rescue, we chose to make their crates a special place. The door was always open, but they could take their Kong (often filled with peanut butter) in there, just to get away from it all.

For these beagles, I'd imagine that a doggie bed would be great. Another selection that would be top (especially for a beagle) in an extendable leash.

Having been confined for so long, a nice soft place to rest, but without constraints like bars will be very important for these rescued beagles.

The Most Amazing Thing

about these dogs, is that they still give humans one more chance to redeem ourselves

For beagles you can't beat an extendible leash

Beagles love to run and sniff. If you let them run free - they will often disappear for long periods of time. This can be frustrating and dangerous too. A really long extendable leash is a great idea to keep your new pal safe. Do make sure to keep your dog under control near traffic. I prefer to use my extendable leash only when in a safe area where the dog can have more freedom without danger.

Its all about freedom for these guys - but done in a way that you can keep them safe!

A Great Book About Adopting a Beagle

Beagles are not the easiest dogs to own, but they are one of the most pure hearted. I can't count how many times I have come across owners in the woods carrying a leash looking for their dog, and when I ask what breed of dog, the answer is often "A Beagle". They are born to follow their nose. This book does a great job of getting you to think like a beagle. This allows you to anticipate problems before they arise, but more importantly how to help to make your dog as happy as possible with a low level of stress.

The beagles featured on this lens deserve a break. The best way to do this is to equip yourself with the knowledge that will allow you to make them happy, eliminate difficulties and ensure that they can stay with you for years to come.

We can all make a difference

By volunteering, donating, or even purchasing items on sites like this (where proceeds get directed to dog rescue charities and not to the author), we can all make these guys suffer less. There is always a need to foster families, people to help with administration, people to shuttle dogs to the vets..... it all makes a difference. Charities like ARME, ASPCA, BARK-Ottawa and numerous others have a long road ahead of them, and they can't do it without our help.

My Choice as a Beagle Bible

This book is truly inspiring. Reading about other people's experience with beagles can show you the great characteristics of this breed, their loyalty and how often, they might seem to think with their noses. They are truly one of the most endearing breeds of dogs, while also being at times one of the most frustrating. By understanding how a beagle might think in a particular situation, you can arm yourself with a plan to stay one step ahead (no forget that - it's not going to happen), or at least how to plan for eventualities.

This is a great comprehensive book. I've never seen anything like it when it comes to beagles.

The Size of this Problem is Staggering

Here is an example from Detroit

Research dogs are just an example of the problem. The number of abandoned dogs is staggering. These dogs are cast loose to fend for themselves. They need a helping hand. This is not just a matter of throwing a scap of food to them, but of helping to rebuild the infrastructure and support facilities that are needed in a responsible society!

There Really Are Angels!

some good news

Here is some happy news that shows a step in the right direction. A single donor steps forth to begin to improve things in Detroit. But remember, this is a problem that needs continued support. $1.5M in a city with 50,000 stray souls means about $30/dog. The rest of us need to step up (not just in Detroit, but everywhere) to do our part too!

Thanks for sharing this and making a difference. Great to see the positive outcome in this case, but like you said, there is much to be done. Each one of us can continue to make a difference, no matter how big or small. Stay blessed!

Thank you for making a difference by sharing the story of research dogs and their rescue. It truly is amazing that dogs will forgive and entrust their care to another human after going through a painful situation with one.

I only became aware of some of the animals, like beagles, that are being used in research recently. We always hear about the mice and chimps, but not much about other species that are considered very desirable for research. It breaks my heart when I learn about the horrors that so many animals face in labs.

My sister used to work for a research lab that she wound up reporting. Nothing happened. It is a tragedy. So called scientists become removed emotionally to their cruelty. I am so glad about this rescue.. angel blessed.

One of my latest rescues came to me from the beach at St. Croix - she was very timid (and still is to a degree) but I'm not sure I've ever seen a more grateful dog. Love your lens!

This is wonderful news, dogs should have plenty of room to run free and have the love and attention they need. :)

thank goodness, they have been freed. imagine the kids coming from poor families in argentina. glaxo smith kline tested the medicine on the poor kids and they died. parents do not know how to read and write and they were not aware of what they were signing.

This is a most touching webpage. Here in Germany we also have some problems like this, but it appears that the USA has much greater distance to go from us to fix this. I hope to see improvements as peoples become aware of this.
