A Guide To Residential Flood Barriers
Ranked #9,374 in Home & Garden, #117,321 overall
There are places in the world where floods are a constant hazard and people expect them as a matter of course. Many of these locations are in underdeveloped countries where the danger of flood is constant during certain times of the year and not only property, but also lives are lost each flood season. However even in developed countries the flood hazard exists and the wise homeowner prepares ahead of time and is ready to defend their property against rising waters with residential flood barriers.
Most municipalities have a plan of action in place where flood protection may be erected when needed but it is often not effective in stopping strong flood waters or protecting many private homes against damage. Flood protection and barriers has become a strong new industry and offers barriers against flood which may well save property and even protect a home against significant damage.

Benefits And Options
A private dwelling usually is the most valuable item a family owns but the contents can be priceless photos and memorabilia which would be irreplaceable if damaged by flooding. While it is a logical step to erect barriers and protection if a home is built on a flood plain ever homes built in low risk areas can suffer damage due to the unexpected. Almost anyone who owns a home will tell you that their home is well worth protecting but they usually don't know how to begin.
There are new options in home flood protection but before delving into these it might be worthwhile to explain just why a flood is damaging. Unfortunately a person who has never witnessed a flood in all its primal fury may have the perception that flood damage results from just excessively high water. While water damage does constitute a large part of the damage done there potential is much greater.
Perhaps the most vivid imagery possible to explain a flood to someone who has not experienced it is to picture a tremendous log, a tree trunk uprooted by raging water bobbing along in the flood. This log heads directly for a house and while the flood water is there already this huge log strikes the house shattering windows, breaking down the door. Eventually the log's force is spent and it lodges there holding the door open the damage already accomplished.
Protection for the home can include either movable flood protection or permanent flood protection. While either one has advantages they both has some disadvantages as well. Permanent barriers are very frequently designed to blend with the style of the house and be virtually undetectable. Glass or aluminum or steel barriers are meant to protect against water but also against damage from objects being propelled along by the water. The most obvious disadvantage to this type of barrier is that they tend to be costly. Few barriers will waterproof a home completely but most will help prevent a great deal of the damage which might otherwise occur.
Free standing barriers are mobile barriers and the greatest advantage to these types of protection is that they can be moved easily to any location and stored out of sight when not needed. The most distinct disadvantage to this type of protection is that sudden storms could leave the owner trudging through blinding rain to try and set up the barriers before the flood hits. They are usually less expensive to purchase and lightweight so they are easy to carry.
There are many other options as far as flood barriers for the home and property but the mobile and permanent barriers are very common. Flood protection has come a very long way in a short time and few homeowners in areas prone to flood can afford to do without it. In today's world the homeowner has flexibility in both design and style of flood shields.

- Hi Am3lia - Wow - nice hub and that video on train vs flood - very interesting. What really amazes me is how many people dont have flood insurance. Water damage caused by raising waters (rivers, broken levees etc) is often not covered by regular homeowners insurance.
