Solar Energy 

Solar energy, radiant light and heat from the Sun, has been harnessed by humans since ancient times using a range of ever-evolving technologies. Solar radiation, along with secondary solar-powered resources such as wind and wave power, hydroelectricity and biomass, account for most of the available renewable energy on Earth. Only a minuscule fraction of the available solar energy is used.

Solar powered electrical generation relies on heat engines and photovoltaics. Solar energy's uses are limited only by human ingenuity. A partial list of solar applications includes space heating and cooling through solar architecture, potable water via distillation and disinfection, daylighting, solar hot water, solar cooking, and high temperature process heat for industrial purposes.

Solar technologies are broadly characterized as either passive solar or active solar depending on the way they capture, convert and distribute solar energy. Active solar techniques include the use of photovoltaic panels and solar thermal collectors to harness the energy. Passive solar techniques include orienting a building to the Sun, selecting materials with favorable thermal mass or light dispersing properties, and designing spaces that naturally circulate air.

Purchasing solar panels for your home is a large investment that will help you to reduce your electricity costs over the long term. In order to meet this goal, it is important that the panels that you purchase and the company that installs the panels be of the utmost quality. These ten tips for choosing a solar panel installation company will ensure that the experience is smooth, and you get the most value for your investment.

1. Location - One of the first aspects to look for in a solar panel installation company is its installation area. If you select an installer without looking at installation area, you may be disappointed when you find they do not install in your area. Make a preliminary list of local installers by looking in the phone book and by searching online for solar panel installers.

2. Certification - Make sure that the installers you are reviewing are NABCEP certified. This national organization provides certification for installation of photovoltaic, solar thermal and small wind turbine systems. Also ensure that the installer includes a licensed master electrician to oversee the connection of your system to the electrical grid.

3. Subcontracting - A quality installer will not subcontract any of the installation tasks. Make sure that the installer will perform all of the installation with their own personnel.

4. Responsiveness - While researching installers, keep in mind how each installer responds to your inquiries. An installer who does not have time to answer questions about their systems may not be responsive during the installation process, or after the installation is complete.

5. Experience - How long has the installer been in business and how many systems similar to yours have they installed? Ask the installer how long their employees have been working with the company.

6. Reputation - A good installer will be able to provide you with references for work they have successfully completed. Also, check with the Better Business Bureau to see if anyone has filed any complaints against the installer.

7. Brands - Each installer has relationships with different solar panel brands. Some installers may exclusively use one brand of panels, while others may stock an assortment of panel brands and configurations. Become familiar with the brands by reviewing literature on each brand's web site.

8. Warranty - An installer should stand by the work they perform, and provide a warranty of at least 5 to 10 years. Take time to understand the terms of the warranty, and what parts and/or service are included.

9. Rebates - Many utilities and states offer rebates for installing solar panels on your home, and the installer that you select should help you with the paperwork for the rebates. These rebates can be significant, covering half of the installation cost or more for your solar panel system. Check first with your local utility to learn what offers are currently available, then check to see if your city or state has additional offers. The rebate process can be tricky and take time, so choose an installer that is willing to do the legwork for you.

10. Price and Payment Terms - Price can be a factor in your decision, but it should never be your primary decision factor. In many cases, you get what you pay for. However, different companies will have different contracts with suppliers and different overhead rates. Keep your budget in mind, but don't immediately reach for the lowest bid without reviewing the other aspects of the company.
